Mr Clean magic erasers

Sorry if this is a repeat, but I used the search feature and seem to only be coming up with raves for these things.

So we're moving out of our rental and I'm just going over the walls with the magic erasers (most of the marks the movers/our pets put on the walls). Couple things make me wonder if I'm doing this wrong:

- the eraser is basically just crumbs within minutes after using hardly any pressure

- they seem to leave a dirty residue over the wall which almost looks worse than when I started.

Am I missing a step, or doing it completely wrong? I don't really want to 'wash' the walls, as such, because I don't know what paint was used. If its not waterproof, I don't want to ruin it by using too much water...

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

Re: Mr Clean magic erasers

  • Aye I've been wetting it a little. The marks are coming off... I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that. But I agree with you about it leaving wet spots or sometimes it looks like when you're trying to wash a spot of mud off the floor and you just end up smearing the mud around.

Thanks for your input though... helps to know the process is right, just might be on the wrong surface!

I also bought some of the extra power ones. Have to say I like those better... wall seems cleaner after and it didn't fall apart so quickly.

  • I like the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, but I only really use them on our baseboards and on the bottoms of our doors to get off shoe marks or wet nose marks. You're right OP, they do start to crumble within just a few minutes of using them. That's part of the reason that I don't buy them often or in bulk. I know that some people swear by them. I know that they sell the ones with the scrubber pad that you can use in the kitchen sink or bathtub, but I'd rather just use some Soft Scrub and a stainless steel scrubber or some Simple Green.
  • I'm curious about the paint you're using it on.  I love the Magic Erasers and use them all over my house, but I probably wouldn't use it on a flat paint.  If the paint is semi-gloss or glossy, it would probably  be fine, but the downside to flat paint is that you can't really "clean" any spots on the walls - you have to paint over it.

  • I bought these once and they didn't seem to clean anything that I tried them on.  I followed the directions to run it under water and ring out before use, too.  We both must be doing something wrong because there are people out there who swear by them. Huh?
