My husband and I are moving from Ohio to Florida in May of 2014. We will have about 8k saved up for the move and didn't know if this was enough? I plan on getting a job before the move down there. Any tips or suggestions would be great! thanks!

Re: Moving out of state
I can't imagine $8k not being enough for a move, unless you're going to buy a house to move into - in which case, you need a down payment, closing costs, and an E-fund.
If you're planning to pack and move yourself, you can get a Uhaul plus gas for around $2000-2500, depending on the size of your house/apt; if you pack and have movers move you, it'll probably be double that. If you want to sit around and watch while movers both pack up your house and move it for you, you're probably looking at closer to the $8k, though I've never looked into that kind of moving.
You'll also probably need a deposit and 1-2 months of rent saved up if you plan to rent when you get there, but as long as you're willing to do some legwork for your move and not moving to a really HCOL area, I would expect your $8k to cover that as well as a move.

"You know you're in love when you don't want to fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams." - Dr. SeussWe will be finding an apartment down there to start out in. We plan on moving everything ourselves and driving down there. Plan is to stop overnight in GA. I plan on getting a job first and then we will move down there. I researched jobs for Hospitals and there is a lot of options opened so I don't foresee that as a problem.
Edit for more info: We plan on either doing a U-haul or a POD
Are you getting any relocation expenses paid for? I don't know if it's a new company or not, but usually someone is offered a bonus for signing or a relocation fee. Just curious.
8K will probably be plenty depending on your situation. We're in Chicago and about to move to Dallas, and my husband's company offered 8K, and we will have only had about 2 months, plus we have a bit to do with our house (and hopefully securing a renter or buyer!) That being said, we're spending about 8k on our moving expenses + house fix-up, not including whatever it will cost for us to be paying rent and mortgage at the same time. Depending on your situation, I would bet you'll be okay.
I don't know what your car situation is, but renting a U-Haul and doing it yourself is probably half the cost of hiring a mover to go across the country (at least for us.) The downside to that is what to do with one of your cars and how to move it. I would also get a quote on those PODS storage things, and U-Haul now has a similar item where you pack a big box and they move it across the country for you.
You have plenty of time to shop for where you'll live down there (not sure if you're looking for a house or apartment) but keep in mind the upfront costs for those. We're going from a house we own to an apartment down there, and apartments come with deposits, app fees, pet deposits, first month's rent, etc. Keep things like that in mind.
You do have a LOT of time to look at your budget and save up more if you'd like. I would definitely do some financial rehab ASAP - look to see if there are things you could cut from your budget because you have long enough that little things would add up over the next 10 months.
Best of luck!
We are about to from Missouri to Massachusetts within the next two weeks.
We are a family of 4 plus 2 pets in a 3BR house (we are selling our master bedroom furniture and a couple of other small things so it'll all fit in one moving truck). This is our estimated costs
26Ft Penske truck, plus trailer for my car, plus driving DH's Truck will cost us $1,500 plus gas (estimating an additional $1,000 on gas). I saved 20% on the Penske truck with AAA membership (I bought the membership just to get the 20%...it was worth it).
Other options I looked into:
UHaul (same situation as above). $1,900 plus gas of approx. $1,000
ABF Freight $3,000 (they will fill the truck with other freight if you don't fill the truck up yourself--I didn't really like this, plus their delivery date was like a 4-7 day window....this wouldn't work with my new job). Plus gas for DH's truck to drive $400-$500
Fullblown movers (don't lift a finger yourself). With packing $9,000. Without packing $8,000
PODS (they didn't service our area, but when I talked to U-Pack (part of ABF) they said for the amount of stuff we have it would be more cost effective to use ABF Freight anyways....they said the PODS really cater to apartments (savings wise).
We will be driving over a 3 day period (dragging it out because of the kids and pets) and estimate another $500 in hotels/meals.
