Hospital bags

I know it still might be to soon but being 31 weeks pregnant and with the way my doctor talked to me at my last appointment, I'm afraid to wait any longer to be prepared in case she comes sooner.

I have googled and researched but the lists online seem so crazy, so I want your opinions.

For my already moms-

What did you pack? (Include quantities please)

What did you actually use from what you packed?

Is there anything you wish you had packed?

For my moms to be-

What do you plan on packing? (Include quantities please)

If you have seen those outrages lists on the Internet, is there anything you would add or remove to those lists?

I am out of questions but if anyone else has any questions they would like to ask please do so. I want all the input anyone can offer :)

TIA ladies!

Re: Hospital bags

  • What do you plan on packing? (Include quantities please)

I'm planning on bringing (so far...):

2 pairs Yoga pants/capris for relaxing before I need to be showing my lady bits off and for when guests show up.

At least 2 nursing tanks and t-shirts

    A hoodie

    Granny panties (a whole pack.)

    Nursing bras

    Snacks (granola bars, apples...), gum/mints

     Phone charger

My pillow and a towel from home

    slippers or slipper socks

    3 simple outfits for baby

blankets for baby (January is cold in PA!)

    Boppy

Small thank you packages for the nurses (hand sanitizer, Chapstick, lotion, granola bar)

    camera

travel size shampoo, body wash, toothpaste, face wash, lotion, toothbrush

makeup (foundation, shadow, mascara) I don't feel comfortable for pictures without it.

A white onesie for guests to sign!

If you have seen those outrages lists on the Internet, is there anything you would add or remove to those lists?

I think a lot of the stuff is unnecessary.

In all reality that was wayyyy too much crap. Baby stayed in hospital kimono shirts until we left and they provided everything she needed as far as immediate care goes and the swaddle sacks. I planned to wear makeup but was too exhausted to even put it on. They also had all the pads I needed there so bringing my own was dumb. I used their towels because I didn't want to ruin mine. The Kindle, IPod, etc. never got used because we were all so tired and in a fog anyway. The laptop was useful so I'd bring that again. I also liked having my own clothes so any type of fat pant and shirt were great. I used the Boppy a little and I forgot my own pillow so next time I'd bring that. The robe was also unnecessary for me because it all just went so fast, also my hospital had one there if I had needed one. Lesson learned, I will NEVER pack that much crap again.

I wasn't packed when I went into labor, so I threw in a nursing tank and bra and capris sweats for me and comfy clothes for H. I grabbed phone and kindle chargers. I threw in my glasses, make up, brush and contact solution. We bought toothbrushes and toothpaste at the gift shop. My sister brought my lanolin and breast pads. I didn't need the breast pads at the hospital, bc my milk didnt come in until we got home.

The hospital provided all the diapers, Vaseline, cloths (they didn't use wipes, so somebody brought us some.), clothes and swaddle.

honestly, I just spent time in the hospital gown and wore the mesh underwear for a week after I left the hospital. I also took pads and ice packs from the hospital.

We brought two going home outfits for the baby.

  • Thank you ladies :)

So should I pack a bag for DH and I and then pack LOs stuff in the diaper bag?

I brought way too much stuff last time around.  Like MRads I stayed in the hospital gown the whole time I was there (less than 36 hrs) and wore their mesh underwear. Why run the risk of ruining my own stuff?  Plus the gown is much more convenient for all the times they have to come in and check you. They provided all the items I would need for post partum care as well as everything the baby needs while there.  They even send you home with extra items for both post partum and baby care I.e. nasal aspirator, diapers, wipes, tucks pads, huge maxi pads, mesh underwear, peri bottle, dermoplast spray, sitz bath, rx for colace and pain meds etc....

I used some basic toiletries, definitely not make up but I normally don't wear make up.  I also didn't shower while I was there since it was a pretty short time.  I wore home yoga pants and a long loose maternity shirt.  While I was there I wore my slippers.  We had a couple different size going home outfits for baby since we weren't sure of what size to bring.  We also brought and used a plain white onesie to have her footprints put on.

DH used a pair of sleeping shirts, a couple t shirts, underwear,  flip flops, and basic toiletries.

Then we had electronics - cameras, cell phones, a lap top with camera so we could Skype our parents and extra batteries/chargers.  Change is good for the vending machine, snacks, and basic things like Tylenol for your DH if he needs it because the hospital won't administer anything to him since he isn't a patient.

If being induced, a book, DVDs, cards etc may be good.  We also bring massage tools and things to help me relax since I am trying for a med free birth again.  Last time we didn't have a chance to use any of it though before DD made her entrance.

I took the whole diaper bag and it was way too much. All I needed was the sleeper she wore home and a blanket to put over her in the car seat. I would just throw baby's things in your bag.

  • My water broke unexpectedly at 36 weeks so we quickly packed before heading to the hospital.

I brought and used yoga pants, tank tops, nursing bras, regular underware, a zip up, slipper socks, toiletries including make-up, lap top, camera, boppy, a onesie and footed sleeper for LO, and a big blanket from home which was awesome to have.

I hated the hospital gown and only wore it for the few hours between getting my epi and her being born.  I felt much better in my own yoga pants and a tank top.  I did wear the mesh underware in the hospital but my bleeding was never to a point where I was worried about ruining my clothes.  our hospital had everything else we needed.

Is there anything you wish you had packed?

I went into labor at night, but it it was during the day a card game might have been nice to pass the time.
