Re: Ear tubes
We had wait a while to get his first appt too.
He had SO many infections the previous winter, more colds, more bronchitis, as well as ear infections. This winter, no ear infections, and I feel he had a "normal" amount of other infections/viruses. We also put him on allergy meds, and I think it's this combination that worked for him.
Ava had them at 16 months and they worked wonders. She had about 15 ear infections leading up to that and we were not going to wait any longer. She had one infection after and has been good since despite the fact they fell out about 9 months ago.
The procedure itself was very simple and very fast; ten minutes exactly. The recover was great and she was back at school the following day.
We ended up going to CHOP in Chalfont and was able to be fit right in. Oops, ignore, I see you already have an appointment at St. Christopher's. Good luck. You will notice a drastic difference in hearing immediately after. It was quite profound in our case.
other than mama and dada he hasn't really talked and now I'm wondering if this is why. if he cannot hear us clearly he won't be able to repeat things... he also likes really loud noises but again maybe it is because they aren't loud to him???? I'm hoping we can get in pretty quickly.
What should I expect at the first appt??
just a consult, plus ear looking. Has he had a hearing test! The original ENT did one for Brooks, but the one at CHOP didn't.
he had a hearing test after birth and then another one a month or two late due to being a preemie... but none since then.
Oliver got tubes put in when he was about 8 months old. He failed his hearing screen when he was discharged from Pennsy, then he had several abnormal ABR tests throughout the first 9 months of his life. We were even prepared to get him hearing aids! They wanted to put in tubes first to see if that would help.
They really helped his hearing, and he no longer needed the aids. He got less ear infections and his speech took off.
The surgery was really simple. I didn't even have time to sit down to drink my coffee, and they called us to come back and see him.
Sorry, I forgot to check back.
Bascially, they will go over his history of ear infections, take a look, and give him a hearing test, which, in my opinion, is very subjective but gives them some type of insight at least. They will arrange a date for the tubes.
In my case, we got to CHOP (the center in Chalfont, not the hospital) early in the morning. They prepped her and gave her a mild sedative. They wheeled her out and literally 10 minutes later we were taken back to the recovery room. She was hysterical for a good hour but she eventually relaxed and was fine by the afternoon.
I never realized how poor her hearing must have been as almost immediately after I noticed a marked improvement in her speech; it was astounding! It definitely could be a reason in your case.
It was totally worth it....X 2892894298023. We have had no issues since. GL!!
Thanks guys! I ended up getting his cold and so did dh (the cold that lead to the ear infections) so I've been Mia.
I hope they can get him in for the surgery soon. Now that I'm sure he will need it I want it sooner than later.
did your kids have to wear ear plugs afterward when they went in the water? People have mentioned that but I've read that's not the case anymore.
