Tipping Etiquette

Two questions:

The dads gave me a gift certificate for a spa afternoon. It specifically says "gratuity including". I exchanged the massage for a different service so I'll be with one person the whole time. I'm going to feel awkward not tipping her, but it is included. Do I casually mention this. Not say anything? So weird.

second question:

tonight I picked up take out, the waitress circled the tip and total amounts. I was really annoyed and didn't leave as much. How much tip do you normally leave for take out. Am I a total *** for leaving a little less?

Re: Tipping Etiquette

  • 1. I would just say something like "I understand the gratuity was already given to you. is that right?"  That is a really nice gift! I hope you enjoy your you time!

    2. tip for take out???? I honestly don't think I ever tip for take out unless it is carside and then it is only a few dollars.  Maybe I'm wrong but isn't the tip for service and if it is take out what service is there??

I agree on all accounts. I never tip for take out. Rut Roh, am I supposed to?!

  • 1. Call the salon before the appointment and confirm the value of the trade-in + gratuity is equal to the massage + gratuity. With most massages, I have found that I don't see the therapist after my appt, as they provide me with privacy to get changed and are usually with their next client. So, the tip is usually left with the recptionist.

    2. WTF? Was this a restaurant in the ville? Please tell us the name!!! That's absolutely ridiculous!!!

  • I agree with the above!

Tipping for take out....crazy!  Main reason, we get take out is to save money and to not get dressed to go out!

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't tip on take out. It scared me!!

  • 1-Like someone else mentioned, I would probably call the salon and confirm with them that a proper gratuity was included even with the change in service.

2-I don't order takeout often, but when I do, I usually tip a dollar per person.  If I'm picking up an order for 4 people, then I'll tip 4$.  I don't do this at the local pizza shop, but if I'm ordering pickup from a full fledged restaurant.  I have no idea where I came up with this logic.  I would be seriously peeved about the situation you encountered, and would probably have left zero.

  • This was at a full out restaurant, not a take out place, and it was in KOP not Pville. Thanks for the follow up. I'm glad I'm not alone.

  • Most high end salons you aren't allowed to tip directly. But in an envelope.

Ha. I don't know about the circle thing may or may not annoyed me.

  • The circling is annoying and presumptuous. BUT, I think if you're ordering take out from a straight up restaurant (i.e. not a pizza shop, chinese store, etc.) then the waitress is taking time to box it up, take your payment, etc. I worked at a diner in HS and I hated take out orders bc they took a lot of work, took me away from my actual tables and I was rarely tipped for them.

  • If it matters....the place is a sorts bar and the lady was the bartender, this was at 445, the place was practically deserted.
