Going rate for babysitters

We're trying to extend our options to non-family members because it's too difficult for us.

I posted on our local community FB board for recommendations and one girl messaged me and said she charges $12-$15/hour!  Eek!  Is that typical?

Geez, I'll be paying them to watch tv most of the time since he goes to bed at 8!

Re: Going rate for babysitters

  • We have a high school girl we use for nights out and pay her $12/hr.  But that is for Charlie and Sam.  She will also do dinner for them and put them to bed.  She is super reliable, trustworthy and I know her parents too

  • I don't have kids, but have done a lot of babysitting, $12-15 sounds about right for 2+ kids.  For only 1, I think $10 would be acceptable (although I've gotten paid $20+/hr). Granted, I'm a little older. You could probably pay a kid in high school $8-10, if you're comfortable having someone younger watch them.

  • when I was I was in law school I did some baby sitting on the main line.. I was paid $15-20 an hour if not more for one kid even at night... they totally overpaid but they were willing to for someone reliable I guess.

Do you have any friends with reliable teenagers? I'd say anywhere from $8-12 would be fair for one kid that is sleeping!

No, this is my problem (outside of using family) - all of my friends have little ones like mine and I'd feel like more of an inconvenience to them.

nieces? nephews? cousins? I'd probably put something on FB and ask if anyone knows a reliable sitter looking for work.  I'm hesitant to use a stranger. but I'm also a bit neurotic haha

  • We pay ours $10 an hour, she's great, was recommended by a teacher at Brooks' school. The other person we use a lot I met at church and knew for 18 months before we used her.

LIKE told John when we move we have to go to church so we can find sitters.

  • Is J at a daycare center now?  DD is, and there are two teachers there who babysit outside of daycare hours.  They charge $10/hour.  It is a wonderful feeling to know that DD will be thrilled for them to come over and play...sometimes I'd rather pay them than use a family member for free, since we're dealing with some major separation anxiety and stranger danger.  She sees them far more often than relatives!

Yes, he's at daycare.  Good idea, I'll have to ask!

  • This is a stretch and I realize you don't know them but the teenager across the street from us just graduated high school and told Eric and I if we ever needed a babysitter to let her know. She's the oldest of 3 girls and the whole family is super sweet. If I only had 1 kid, I'd hire her for sure. I only hesitate bc obviously two newborns can be a bit much and Colin still needs to be given meds, etc. Let me know if you want her name and I can get their number.
