Fitness Post

We haven't done one in a while...how is everyone doing with their workouts?

I have been struggling big time this summer!  Between the heat and just having more activities in general going on, I have been slacking majorly on making the time for my workouts.  I've been active, but not in a disciplined sort of way.

This past week I just got back into running after a long hiatus, so my runs have been a bit challenging.  On Saturday I did a trail run/walk of about 2.5 miles and today I did around 3.5 miles of run/walking on the treadmill. Tuesday and Thursday I plan to do zumba or pilates, then I plan to run on Weds, Fri, and Saturday.

Summer has been really tough for me, but I need get over it and just do it, otherwise I'll never be ready for some of the races I have coming up.

Re: Fitness Post

  • Since I pinched my sciatic nerve my fitness level has taken a hit. But I am finally feeling like I can get my mileage back up and it is hot as hades and K keeps traveling for work making early runs near impossible especially with his own crossfit schedule. But I will stop making excuses and will find time.  The Great Race 5k is my next race, and it is about 11 weeks away. So I have time to improve my race time by then, but i need to start now.

Yoga has been ignored too- cause one cannot stretch and balance with one foot that is about totally numb.

I am also checking out the Jr Great race page... one mile fun run for kids over 5. I think EJ may be into something like that!

  • The last few weeks have been challenging. I wasn't feeling great and lots of things going on and the heat!

Last week I did a couple days of Zumba and a couple runs. My time is definitely suffering in the heat.

I am planning on doing a 5k next weekend with my dog as long as it isn't too hot for her. It's a race through where we adopted her so I'm excited for it. I'm trying to decide if I want to do a 5k this weekend at my local zoo. The temps are supposed to cool off for the weekend so that looks good. I just need to see if dh is ok with me doing a race this weekend and next. I would have to register by Wednesday so not much time left to decide!

  • I have not exercised since June 25.  I got a letter in the mail on June 29 that effective that day, my gym was closed.   We got no notice - nothing.  I knew I had vacation coming up in a few weeks, so I didn't try to find new classes or a gym.  Luckily, someone bought the gym, and it will reopen in August.  (there will be a few free classes a week until then at the gym).  So hopefully I can get back in to the swing of things this week.  And hopefully the new owners/management keep similar classes and times so I don't have to change gyms.

I can already feel a difference in not having done anything and I feel gross.  :P  I had every intention of working out at home, but I'm just not disciplined enough to do it.

  • Okay, I am going to try to public shame myself and hope it is motivating!

I have not worked out since the beginning of May. Ugh, with my sister's wedding, then deciding to buy the new house, trying to get the current house in shape to put on the market (will be able to take a shower in the new bathroom tonight and the kitchen is getting ripped out tomorrow), birthdays, anniversaries, and work I have been slacking big time.

Although, I think I have actually lost weight since now my clothes fit me way better.

  • Add me to the struggling camp.  Last week, I made it out Sunday for just a little over 2 miles, then again Friday night for 2.5 miles.  The heat is just too much for me...Friday night was nice & cool, but there was no way I was going back out over the weekend!  *sigh*  I might have to cave in & try to find something on on-demand that I can do, maybe give the 30 day shred another shot or something....the AC in my gameroom has to be a better option right now!

we did go out yesterday to a trail in Shaler....it was a nice little trail, and had a waterfall that the kids love!  has anyone else been here?

  • I'm actually doing better with my working out! A couple girls in my office workout at lunch and showed me the gym in campus. I've been going over on my lunch 3-4 days a week and I'm *gasp* actually enjoying it. I use the elliptical each time and have found I like it. We have cardio theater equipment so I can use one with a tv attached and it seems to make the time go quickly. I did 2.5 miles today and am proud of myself!
  • I'm just getting fat. ha ha!! Seriously though, my pants are getting tight and that's no sort of good. Perhaps it's because I've been living in my sweat pant shorts that I haven't noticed until the work week rolls around again and I'm too tired to work out.

I'm planning to get way more focused next month and I have the Steelers 5k on the 31st I need to prep for.

Sounds like we're all on the struggle bus right now!! :)

  • I just started Shaun T's Focus T25 and love the 25 minutes!  (all the power to everyone outside running in this heat or who find time to go to the gym...that's just not for me).  I also have a Challenge Group starting on August 5th so I want to stay ahead of my Challengers...

  • Well I woke up early to get my run in before it gets too hot. I normally run in the evenings but even then will probably be too hot. It was about 70 out before 6am which isn't bad but SO humid!!! It's nice to have my run in but I am so much slower in the morning!!'

I ran this morning too!  6:30 I was huffing and puffing and sweating through the neighborhood! I prefer a morning run, especially through the summer. It would be too hot tonight for me!

  • I was doing really well with my core workout.  I was doing it 5 times a week plus zumba and I was really feeling a difference in my core.  (I've been trying to build my core strength back up after pregnancy 2 years agoEmbarrassed)   But then my period comes around and totally derails my routine.  I just get so exhausted, I just don't have energy for "extras" and skipping one day turns into skipping a week.

How does everybody stay on track when not feeling 100%.

  • I usually just force myself to go to class anyway.  Most of the time, I feel so much better after class (even if I felt kind of yucky before) that it's worth it to make myself go.

I always force myself to go to zumba even when feeling yucky, but the core thing is something I do at home.  I am a horrible at keeping myself on an exercise routine at home

it depends on how bad I'm feeling. The past few weeks I hadn't been feeling well and exhausted and I struggled. But I try to still get some workouts in. Depending on how I feel afterwards tells me how to plan for the rest of the week. Like if I go and end up feeling good afterwards then I will push myself to go the rest of the week. But sometimes I really am feeling bad and working out makes it worse. I went out running a couple weeks ago when I wasn't feeling great and felt ok during but felt terrible afterwards.

generally though for periods and general tiredness and minor sickness I do feel better afterwards. I know that so I just do it.  A few weeks ago when I was really tired and didn't want to run I told myself to just go out and try to do a mile. Once I was out there I felt great. I just kept going. I did 5K and had my fastest time ever. So now anytime I'm feeling tired or not good i remember that run. And I just tell myself to give it a chance. If you feel absolutely awful during it, you can stop but chances are you will feel better.

I also try not to beat myself up if I need to take a day off to rest/feel better. I used to let that derail me and make me workout less. Now I use it to motivate me to make sure I get out there and do something as soon as I am feeling better.

Ah, I got ya.  I have no advice on that, because I suck at working out at home.  I am good at pinning ideas on pinterest.  And I was REALLY good at convincing myself I'd do it in the mornings when my gym closed.  And at the beach.  But yeah, I haven't done anything.   Do your kids nap?  Maybe dedicate the first 15 minutes of naptime to exercise?

  • i try to figure out why I am feeling crappy after a workout- it wasn't the workout that made you feel that way. Did you eat enough or too much before? have you had enough to drink through the day?  Being low on fluids makes me want to sleep and i usually feel terrible when I am dehydrated but don't always recognize it as that..

Also- remember why you are working out. It is something you are doing to take care of yourself. Manage stress, increased energy, being able to run and play with your kids, fitting into your clothes better, not feeling guilty over that stop at the ice cream shop.
