Etiquette for new job while PG

I've been a long time lurker and just came back here after scoping out the proboards for a while, and was pleasantly surprised that this board is still active. 

I'm looking for some honest opinions which is why I came here...

I'm scheduled for a third round of interviews this week with a company, found out I'm pg between the beginning and now.  Do I continue even with the knowledge that I won't be eligible for FMLA or Short term disability? I'm also concerned about what these next few months will bring and how I won't be at the top of my game at a new job and then taking leave after a few months, let alone the myriad of possible appointments ahead. Can't be a great impression and without FMLA I assume the job wouldn't be totally secure.  

I realize I don't have an offer yet and I'm very early (5 weeks) and anything could happen, but I've been debating on just removing myself from consideration and not wasting anyone's time any further.  Is there some kind of etiquette to be followed here? Thoughts? Advice?

  • I've been pretty much exactly in your situation, as I found out I was pregnant with my son the day before my interview at my prior job.  I disclosed my pregnancy to my recruiter, but not until the offer was extended.  

    I ended up taking the job.  It was a contract position with the expectation to be hired on as a permanent employee after a few months. I disclosed my pregnancy to my immediate supervisor at 12 weeks.  The ball was basically in their court. I expressed interest in staying on after a leave, which I knew I would have to take unpaid.  I was fortunate enough to prove myself over the next 6 months so they were eager to have me back.  Well that, and the fact that my temp was a stone cold moron, but I digress.  I took a 12 week unpaid leave.

    Legally they can't withhold an offer because you're pregnant, should you decide to tell them.  That's a giant lawsuit waiting to happen.  I would weigh your options.  Can you last the next year at your current job?  Do you trust that you'll be able to prove your worth in the new position so much that they'll work with you and want you back?  I was unemployed so even if I hadn't been hired back, I needed the work right then and there.

  • I'd keep it quiet for now. You're very early and unfortunately even though they're legally not allowed to exclude you they may anyway and use another excuse. Go for it and then go from there if you get hired.

  • I tend to put the horse before the cart, so I'll try to take it easy and just see what happens. I could last another year at my current job. I currently work for the federal government and have for about two years now but I know it isn't for me. Despite the current furloughs, the pay and benefits are good and the schedule flexibility is very attractive, especially for family life. 

    A major concern of mine is performing at a new job while fighting possible nausea and fatigue as long as this thing sticks. I guess I'll go to the interview and take it from there, thanks for the advice/opinions!

    I agree with this. If you are hired, then you can review the full offer, ask questions about their benefits, do calculations to see if you can afford to take unpaid leave etc. As pp has said, if you prove your value in the first few months, many jobs will work with you on leave time.

    Also, my first pregnancy was super easy and I woudlnt have had trouble performing in a new job at all. My last pregnancy was much harder and I was grateful my employer knew of my former capabilities because I certainly lowered my performance and punctuality and increased my moodiness during that one! You never know how your pregnancy will go so I wouldnt count out opportunities based on assumptions.
