Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

Eff.  Someone in Jack's class has it.   And of course his regular teachers weren't there this morning so I couldn't ask any questions.

Anyone's kid ever had it?  How long were they out of daycare with it?  I have no PTO days left so I am screwed if he gets it.

Re: Hand Foot and Mouth Disease

  • V had it last summer.  It spreads like wildfire.  Jack will likely get it.  In fact, he's probably already gotten it, but you won't know until the fevers show up.

V was out for a week.  IIRC, he came down with the fever for a few days, then the blisters showed up. Once the blisters were beginning to heal he was able to go back.  The incubation period when they are most contagious is before the fever even shows up.  He was mostly just uncomfortable.

    Good luck

  • Ugh, I just googled it and yeah, it said to watch for fevers and lethargy first.  Double ugh!  At least it won't seem to cause any complications with my pregnancy so that's good.

  • If you want some hope e didn't get it and his cousin had it and a kid in his class. And he's a preemie! I was horrified when I found out a kid had it.  At his school they can go back 24 hours after the fever breaks so sometimes they aren't actually out that long. Good luck!!

  • It truly sounds worse than it actually is I think. The open sores are why we had to keep him after the fever passed. If you are really curious, email me and I can send you some pictures of what they look like.
  • Oh, I saw a few pics - they look like regular ulcers.

And yeah, I guess I'll have to find out what the daycare policy is regarding when they can come back.

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

  • Maybe it is because my kids are very rarely sick, but I truly thought it was the single most awful week of motherhood. We watched all of the Pixar. All of it.

  • Francey had it after having had roseola (similar - fever then red bumps as the fever goes away) like a two mos before. She was "ok"....one day of fever, and a day or two of rashes. If that timeline is correct in my head, then the HFM presented bumps/rash around her butt and not only the bottoms of her feet and a few on her hands.  she never got anything on/near her mouth.
