Any advice for a 2 year old nail biter?

So, I guess finger nail biting has taken the place of the binky.  She has them chewed down so low.  Does anybody have any advice on how to get dd to stop?

Re: Any advice for a 2 year old nail biter?

  • EJ sucked her fingers the first time we took her binky away. Because of her eczema and reoccuring infections on her hands we gave her the binky back for another year. Now if I catch her with her fingers in her mouth (she often does it when she is upset or stressed) I remind her to take them out of her mouth.

I bit my nails as a child and just stopped cold turkey when I decided I wanted long pretty nails like my mom. I was probably in 2nd or 3rd grade.

Ugh my 5 yo DD still bites her nails. She was constantly told by her teacher to stop, but still does it. She started young. Someone suggested a nail rub sold at Sally Beauty Supply. Don't know how safe that would be for a 2 yo though...

Keefer, who will be 4 next month, bites his nails and around his cuticles and has done it for over a year.  He bites them so much that I hardly ever have to cut them.  I asked his pediatrician and she said there is not much you can do about it.  She mentioned lotion around his cuticles so it would be soft and there would be less to bite but that doesn't help with finger nails.  She said it's surprisingly normal in kids and to not worry about it at this point.  We do tell him to stop when we see him doing it.  Sorry, I'm really no help, just commiserating.

  • I just hate that we traded one bad habit (binky) for another.  I keep telling her I can't paint her finger nails if she keeps eating them.  Hopefully, the peer pressure of her sister getting her nails painted will sink in some day.  At least I know I'm not alone!

I guess I should be thankful she is chewing her nails and not sucking her thumb.
