Fitness ladies: race questions

I finally signed up for my 5Ks! One is just this weekend! I've known about if for awhile but was just waiting to sign up.

This is my first race ever. I'm nervous as far as logistics. It is in a park and partly through the zoo in my area. So there are paths but not super wide. Looking at pics from last year it looks like a lot of people. How do I deal with keeping pace and not being in other people's way and getting around other people. I'm not super fast by any means haha but I'd like to do well (for me) and I don't want to get stuck. The logistics seem complicated :-P

Any other advice for my first race??

Re: Fitness ladies: race questions

  • I ran a 5k on the montour trail this spring, it was an out and back course rather than a loop.  By the time the fast runners were on their way back the pack had broken up enough that they could get through us on their way to finish.

Basically expect it to be crowded initially, and try to line yourself up at a good spot for your pace (don't stand in front if you expect to run an 11min/mile pace) Everyone will get to trotting across the start line where your chip will be picked up and track your official pace which is usually posted later in the day on the race site. the fast runners will take off and everyone else will break apart based on their paces. It is just like driving. Stay to the right if you are slower, but don't be worried about passing people either.  You won't get stuck, and if someone is hogging up too much of the course say something like excuse me and they should slide one way or the other so you can get by.

Have FUN!!! Enjoy the scenery, and your run! Can't wait to hear about it on Monday!

  • For larger races, they usually have you line up by your pace time - so they will have a section for an 8 minute mile, 9 minute mile, etc. that helps with spacing.

The Great Race was my first race, and it was tough in the beginning to maneuver around people in the beginning, but eventually the crowd thinned out.  I was (and still am) super slow, but found that even though my pace wasn't consistent through the crowds, my overall pace was the same.

I was really nervous for my first race too...more because I had no idea what I was doing, not so much because I had to run.  The races are usually pretty organized and there are plenty of people around who do know what they are doing, so it was pretty easy to figure out.  After your first one you will feel like a pro. (And now I am addicted to doing races, I try to do one 1x a month.)

    Good luck!!!

Have fun, don't worry about the pack in the beginning and you will LOVE the rush of waiting for the start. Good luck!
  • Thanks!! Now if only the forecast holds true and the weather cools down. Supposed to not be that bad Sunday!
