Doctor appointment update LONG

Hi girls,

Sorry this is so late. It's been a long, LONG day. What was supposed to be a 1/2 hour appointment turned into a 2-hour appointment and blood work.

I got to the doctor's and they immediately brought me back into the ultrasound room. Baby looks okay. Measuring 15cm at 13w3d and had a HB of 129bpm.

I thought that the 129bpm was low since last time I went the HB was 168, but the tech said that it is normal range for this stage in pregnancy. I'll trust their judgement.

The doctor came in to show me the ultrasound results and they've found three large blood clots that are surrounding the baby. The clots are measuring around 3.5cm x 1.6cm, so they're definitely a considerable size. The doctor said they are subchorionic hematomas caused by bleeding of the uterine wall. I asked what this meant for my pregnancy and the baby and she said that if I have any bleeding whatsoever, no matter the color, that I need to come in for an ultrasound because this puts me at risk for a late-term m/s, if we aren't monitored correctly (it's like a 5% chance, but she was concerned because of the amount of blood and pain I was/am having).

They sent me to get blood drawn and for a Rhogam (which I'll repeat at 24-26 weeks or so) and wrote me a medical note and told me to go home and not go into work. I'm going back a week from now for another ultrasound and exam to check the progress of the clots.

I was already by my office, so I stopped in and gave my boss the medical note. He said that I should go home, that he could see that I was in obvious pain and that I needed to do whatever I needed to in order to take care of the baby and me.

Needless to say, I know I'm in good hands, but I'm frightened beyond words by this news. Thanks for all your T&Ps. I'm going to lie down now.

Re: Doctor appointment update LONG

  • I'm glad everything is looking ok! I know a few ladies on this board (including me) have dealt with SCHs. They can definitely be scary! I had off and on spotting and cramping all the way up to about 30 weeks. I'm sure your Dr. told you that they can resolve on their own and usually don't cause any complications. I hope everything settles down soon!
  • What a long and scary day! Definitely take it easy and try not to worry. It sounds like you're in great hands. I'll be thinking of you!

Hope your SCHs resolve on their own.  I had one with my first pregnancy and bled on and off from week 5 until week 13 or so but everything turned out just fine. FX for the same result for you.

  • A big SCH is why I was off of work for all of first tri, and ultimately quit. They had to send me to a specialist because they couldn't see R because of it. Mine still resolved around 12 ish weeks or at least I quit bleeding around then. I think it was something like 97% will resolve on their own. Just take it easy and try to keep your feet up as much as possible. I know it's scary but try not to worry. I swore I had a mc when mine first started bleeding because it was a full period like gush, but worse.

  • You girls have definitely made me feel better. I'm still in a lot of pain but the bleeding is slowing down (it stopped for a while yesterday and restarted again late afternoon.

I am hoping that we will get a better report at my next appointment next week.

  • Glad to hear that baby is okay, and hopefully the SCH's will go away. Also, as far as the heartrate goes, it does fluctuate a bit. In early pregnancy, it goes from a low rate to a pretty high rate, and back down. Mine went from 120's to high 180's, and settled around 140-150. This is completely normal, so don't stress about it.
