Sleep help

Hi ladies. I'm hoping someone can help us ha. The boys were sleeping in their swings and we finally got to a point where they'd sleep for about 5 hrs at a time. Andrew was getting up once a night and Colin twice (For the sake of this story, I'll focus on Andrew bc I feel Colin is a different situation).

So anyway, we moved them to their cribs this past weekend and now all of a sudden Andrew is up every 3 hrs again to eat. This.is.hell. That means 2 hrs of sleep at a time for me max by the time I feed both, change diapers, pump and get back in bed.

Right now they eat around 7ish, then we either bathe or hang out for a little bit and then we put them in bed. We dream feed them around 9:30/10. I usually overshoot and make a large bottle, knowing they won't eat it all but not wanting to short change them (and hopefully keep them full longer). They are 3.5 months. Is this typical? Is it him getting used to his crib? Is there something else I can try?

Also, they nap during the day in the swings. Should I stop doing that? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Re: Sleep help

  • The bump calls this the 4 month wakeful period. Many question the existence of the 4mw but we experienced it and it was living hell. It lasted a week or so and then resolved. I wondered at the time if it was a growth spurt.

  • God, I hope it doesn't last more than a week. I also wondered if it was a growth spurt which is why I was making larger bottles than normal, just to see if they'd take it. I've been wasting an ounce or two of formula here and there but I don't care because I figured its worth a shot! I was supposed to return to work last week. So glad I have another 6 weeks off. Hoping to have a much better sleep pattern for my return!

  • My only advice is to not do diaper changes in the middle of the night if they're just wet, to save on some time. My daughter will be four months next week and generally goes from 10pm to 6-7am in the same diaper. We used Huggies and recently switched to Target diapers and haven't had any issues with rashes or anything (fingers crossed that continues).

I actually try to check them before I put them back in their crib because if they aren't really wet, I will leave them. Unfortunately Colin tends to poop EVERY time he eats. Andrew on the other hand poops once a day in the morning so that might be an option for him! ha.

  • It could be the 4 month wakeful.

Like LD I thought this was total bunk when I had M but A went through it....for about 6 weeks (Im so sorry to tell you that). I was literally clinically sleep deprived with blurry vision, lack of appetite, loss of focus and the final straw....I started dozing off at traffic lights. By this time she was about 5 months so I felt okay letting her CIO because nothing else worked and clearly I was getting desperate.

My suggestion:  nix diaper changes, dont feed him, and try to soothe without picking up as much as possible. By most people's opinion he's too young for CIO but I think most experts would agree that limited intervention is okay at his age.

  • I actually tried not feeding him last night because it had been just under 3 hours and he usually loads up before bed so I thought..there is no way he's hungry. I went in twice and put a pacifier in his mouth and tried to soothe him (w/o picking him up). After getting out of bed the 3rd time, I fed him and he drained the bottle. I'll give it a few more nights of trying to not feed. Its so hard to tell!

  • I will go against the grain because we never had a four month wakeful with either kid. However my second did not sleep in the mfing crib until he was almost eight months old.  So my advice is to let them sleep wherever works.  Once he finally did transition, it was easy.

So, in conclusion, kids will slowly drive you out of your mind.

  • I took the sleep classes. Most books, experts agree that before 4 months, let them sleep wherever and however they sleep.  We had the 4 month sleep regression. And several after that. You'll get as many opinions as you ask for. Ultimately you have to do what works for all of you.

  • We've had a tough time over the past month when we transitioned into the crib from the rock n play. We finally got dreamfeeding down to a science (at 11pm and 3am), but sometimes he doesn't take the bottle and other times he sinks it.

If they're sinking bottles in the middle of the night, they could be going through a growth spurt. Can you try giving a little more during the day, so they don't wake up hungry as much? We're going to try adding a quarter ounce or half ounce to each daytime feed, so we can eventually take out that 3am one. It's killing us (on top of Graeme waking up just to fuss and Oliver waking up to make me sing songs and get him cups of water).

I stopped my middle-of-the-night pump around 12 weeks. Can you try eliminating that pump? You'll be in pain in the morning, and will need to pump a long time...but it's worth it. I didn't lose any ounces when I cut it out.

I agree with this. I know Ava had a very difficult time transitioning to the crib and once we allowed her to sleep wherever she wanted until she was ready, it was a lot easier. They could not be ready for the crib yet and often them going from a incline sleep (like the swing or bouncer) to a flat crib can be disruptive (in Ava's case at least). She eventually moved into the crib when she was ready, so around 6 months, and all was good. It may be worth a shot for your own sanity!!! GL!!

  • So I moved them back to the swings bc I was loosing my mind. We're back to sleeping 10-3. I guess Andrew wasn't ready yet and I'm not having one in a crib and one in a swing (because each item is in different rooms), when Colin can sleep anywhere!

I guess my only other question is..how will I know when he's ready to move?
