Credit Unions

Do any of you bank at credit unions?

I thought that if you are the member of one credit union, you can go into any credit union, give them your account number and they can pull up your account.  Do you know if that's true?

I know I did this in college with my college CU, but not sure if they had a special partnership being at the college.

I always forget to ask when I go in there...

Re: Credit Unions

  • We bank through a credit union. To my knowledge, you can look up info at any other affiliated branch but they are in their own depressed networks. It's not much different from a regular bank really. You are limited to what you can do at affiliated locations though, it depends.
  • I don't know if they can look it up at any credit union. I've never tried it at any of the credit unions I've been a member at.

  • DH used to have an account through Kemba Credit Union. He was able to go to any of the Teacher's Credit Unions and deposit money.

  • I used to be part of a credit union.  I never tried accessing my account at any other one, but they would let you use other credit union's ATMs for no fee.  Though that changed about 3 years ago.  I stopped using them and switched to a larger bank once they started charging to use any other ATM (so not only would you be hit with the ATM fee in itself but then the credit union charged another 1.99 or something crazy for not using their ATM, none of which were anywhere near my home or office!).

  • I believe mine has a "network" of other credit unions I can use. When I lived in OR, my CA union had a list of acceptable credit unions I could bank at without a tremendous fee. So I don't think any one can just look up your info, but not 100% sure.
  • I've never heard of that.  I rarely do much with my CU.  My parents got me "in" so I just keep a little stash of money there in case I need a loan.

I know they just started letting you use your card at other CU ATM's, but this is probably because my CU is so small that they don't even have an ATM.

I might look into this because DH doesn't like my CU for how small and behind-the-times it is.  He won't finance anything through them because they have no way to pay bills online.
