need ideas for care package (mom having surgery)
My mom's having knee surgery in a couple weeks and will be at a hospital/rehab facility for over a week. Her bday is also a few days before surgery. What else can I give her?
- amazon giftcard (she has a kindle)
- light gauzy scarf
- healthy snacks, nuts, granola bars
- magazines
- new water bottle

Re: need ideas for care package (mom having surgery)
My mom had knee surgery this past year, and was at a rehab for a few weeks afterwards. A few things that I can remember that she loved/needed while there.
She was always cold, and really appreciated a small down throw blanket.
Afterwards, you are in comfy clothes. A nice sweatsuit.
My Mom was not hungry at all. The woman loves candy, but it was not appealling those first few weeks.
You don't get to shower the same way you do at home, and she was happy for some baby wipes and nice lotion.
Books and magazines
That is all I can think of right now.
Your ideas are great. I second the idea of comfy clothes and impromptu shower/face wipes and if her hair is longer, some kind of hair ties / headbands/ hair clips. Keep in mind that her leg will be swollen and/or iced/heated a lot so yoga pants or gouchos or something that wont be real tight but will be comfy would be great. Also nice pjs that could pass as normal clothes, or vice versa, might be nice for the first week or so when getting changed is such a hassle and so much pain, literally. Also a pair of slippers so that her non-surgery foot can be cozy.
Is she crafty or interested in becoming crafty if she has nothing else to do?! You could send her some stuff to crochet, knit, embroider, crossword puzzles, etc. You could send her photos of the boys and other family and some scrapbook supplies.
If she's limber, maybe nail polish and stuff to do a pedicure or her own nails--that takes a while and gives you something to do!
Her own socks with little grips on the bottom, the hospital ones are uncomfortable (for me).
does she have Internet access at the rehab hospital?
She can probably get wi-fi. I'm actually debating getting her a kindle fire (going in on it with my brother and dad as a b-day gift).
I love the idea of the blanket, slippers, and photos of grandchildren. Thanks so much!
An eye mask and ear plugs for sleeping.
Tell her to bring her own pillow and buy a few pillow cases that she can trash when she's finished. There's never enough pillows in the hospital and I don't like the idea of bringing home germs from the room and putting them in bed at home. Leave her nice blankets at home.
A little carrying case for toiletries with a handle or hook that she can hang in the room/closet/bathroom. There's never enough places to put stuff in hospital rooms.
As far as clothes - I wouldn't buy pants bc if she's having knee surgery her knee will be swollen and they're going to need to have easy access to it to assess and tend to her incision. Maybe a night gown with a robe.
A notepad and pen and folder so she can keep hospital papers organized and she can write notes when the docs come visit her in her room.
I think that's all I've got for now.
