who knows about 529 acounts?

I have been planning to start a 529 account since M was born.  I am clearly procrastinating.  I keep getting stuck on whether I should do a national one or a state one.  I am in Wisconsin and it seems that going through edvest is my only state option.  Otherwise I have looked at Sallie Mae's national one.  That is as far as I get.  I'm unclear if the tax advantage will be the same for state vs national.

Help.

Re: who knows about 529 acounts?

  • For specifics, you should consult an accountant regarding tax-related questions as everyone's scenario is different.

But, in general, contributions to 529's are tax deductible.

We live in MN and we have our DS's and DD's 529's in NV. You do not have to choose the one for the state in which you live.

In fact, you may want to research the most popular state 529's and see how they are performing and base your decision on that.

  • So what I'm asking is are the tax benefits the same no matter which state/national plan you use or does each one have different tax benefits.

You need to look into the states in which you are interested in to find out your answers. And, like I said, in general 529 contributions are tax deductible, but since everyone's financial picture is different, you should consult an accountant if you still have questions.

  • 529 plans are good and we do them all the time but there are some more creative college planning tools. One option is whole life insurance. If your child is young you can lock in a low premium and have it paid up a a certain age. for example a 15 pay. this would build cash value that your child can use for college, a car, house down payment etc. My husband and i run a financial planning and insurance business and do college saving plans all the time. i would be willing to go over some options with you if you'd like. Im in Florida but we are licensed in Wisconsin :) my email is laureljennine@gmail.com
