Grandparents houses

This will be the first grand baby for my in laws and my MIL was asking me what she should have at her house.  My parents have a high chair, bouncy seat, play mat, books, and some toys as far as the infant stage goes. Anything else you ladies can think of?

Also, do you think they need a car seat base?  My husband mentioned getting one for each set of grandparents but I think they could just borrow one of our cars or move the base to their car. Thoughts?

Re: Grandparents houses

  • We have nothing at my in laws as they live several hours away and we bring what we need if we go up there. My mother watches her during the week so she has a pack n play, diapers, wipes,  bottles, formula, some clothes, a few toys and books, a playmat, swing, and bathtub. We have 2 car seat bases for my DH and I and we just switch the base out when we exchange M. They are so easy to install that it seems silly to have more than 2.

  • I'll also add that the pack n play, swing, and bathtub were not brand new items as we found them at sales. There's no need to buy brand new bigger items, at least for us there wasn't.

My parents have an infant car seat, bases, a crib, a rnp and a pack n play for the infant stages. The rnp is really really nice, bc you can take it outside, upstairs, downstairs, etc easily. The car seat has been nice for my nephew, so they don't have to switch the base out. Once an infant base has been installed, I recommend getting it checked out by a certified person (check with your police/ems) and then don't move the base. My parents have more than is necessary, bc my niece and nephew lived with them when they were 1 and 2.5, so things like a crib aren't really necessary. My parents have extra diapers and clothes at their house, which. Is nice bit not necessary.

  • I've had several friends offer us stuff and I figured I'd take them up on it for grandma's house.

We are lucky that we live less than an hour from our parents.

Both have a PNP, sheets, toys, sippies, bibs, spoons and books that stay at each set's house. My ILs also have a jumperoo and high chair. My mom will be getting a high chair soon. They just moved here, so they don't have as much.

It is helpful to have stuff there so I don't have to bring as much when we come over.  It also makes it easier when packing an ON bag.

As far as the base goes, if they will be taking LO somewhere often, I say yes. But we just install the seat in their cars if we are leaving DS there.

  • My mom is planning on having a PNP, crib (her choice, not mine...), toys and a high chair that attaches to a kitchen chair. My MIL already has most of that from our niece's on H's side. My dad and FIL won't have much, my dad did mention having toys and getting a baby pool for the summer.

  • pack n play, wipes and washcloths. Also, if my parents were keeping her long enough to take her out, we would install a base into their car. They don't drive her enough to have a base in their car all of the time. If we all go somewhere together, we take our car.

  • nothing really. my IL's have toys and a high chair from the other grandbaby. he plays with a little bit of that. they have bought things, but it wasn't really necessary. my parents have a really old high chair and an old exersaucer that they had on hand for the other grandbaby, plus toys. he used those things a little bit. i didn't expect anyone to have anything on hand and honestly those things were only helpful while we were transient or visiting for days. now that we are just popping by for awhile those things don't matter.
Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!

My ILs watch L periodically, so they have a PNP, a high chair, a car seat base, a swing, and they just got a jumperoo because we got one (we told them it was totally not necessary though). For us the car seat base was a must because they watch L for 14 hours, and they spend most of the day at their house and then bring him back at bedtime and hang at our house until I get home. I always pack a bag with diapers, wipes, toys, extra clothes, bibs, burp cloths, etc., but MIL sometimes buys those things for him too.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • Yea, I think it depends on how often baby will be there.

My IL's have pretty much everything they need because this is their 12th grandchild and they live out of state. When we go with all of DH's siblings, there has been a baby around for quite some time. They have just kept those things on hand.

My mom is local but will only have LO every once in a while. We bought her a PNP and a basic bouncer to keep. Also second hand. I will just leave the diaper bag with her when she has him.

Once he gets bigger, if she needs a high chair we'll buy her one.

  • I will not be giving either set of grandparents a car seat base. There is no reason for them to have to take her anywhere. If we are gone long enough for them to need one, I will just give them one of our car seat bases since we have two.

If anything I would just get a pnp for your in-laws house. Everything else is easy to transport.
