lurker needing advice

hi, I've lurked around for a while but now I need a bit of advice.  I'm the executive assistant for a hotel that is currently closed for renovations.  In the meantime I've been relocated to our corporate office where they're experimenting with creating a Global Wholesale Specialist, position.  I'm 80% certain that I'll be offered the job here once it's time for my hotel to reopen and they'll find a replacement for me there.  Here's my dilemma:

I'm going into a meeting next Friday with the VP of Sales & Revenue about the breakdown of the job and my demands.  I'm scared out of my mind!!  I feel like I ave no idea what i'm doing.  I don't have a college degree, my property was the joke property of the chain, everyone here is very chic and I feel like an ugly duckling in a pond of swans (they wear Nordstrom's/Saks and I wear Penny's clothes).  Part of me things I won't get the job, that they'll use me to create the structure and tasks, then they'll get someone else to do it and I'll be shipped back to my property.

What do I ask?  No one has had before!!  How much is too much to ask for?  This company is known for paying on the low scale, I make $26k and the standard is $28k.  I would like to ask for $31, but I don't want to price myself out of the position.  The VP has said to others that my "seat is in my salary".  I'm having an anxiety attack a day!

Thanks for listening, my poor husband is probably about to duct tape my mouth closed because I can't calm my mind.

Re: lurker needing advice

  • I don't know this field, but if they're talking to you about the job like this, they probably want you. Ask for what you want in terms of salary, but be prepared for them to counter offer. If you never ask, you'll DEFINITELY not get it.
  • If you don't ask you won't get.  Period.  I just had a job offer that I thought was low (even though I was going to take it anyways for different reasons).  I told them I thought the offer was low and they came back a little higher.  Not a ton higher.  But higher.  And if I accepted the first offer that would have been it.

Do NOT underestimate yourself.  They are talking you up like this, obviously because they want you.  Don't sell yourself short.

  • thank you.  i think coming from my property to here has really put me in a state of culture-shock.

i sincerely hope they keep me here.  i'm worried of being used and thrown back to my property.  i really want this position!

and i asked some of the girls if they would be interested in going to Ross/TJ Maxx with me.  just like a fun girls outing.

i'm still worried about the meeting on friday.

good lord, i used a lot of exclamation points in my post!
