Nursing Pads/Lanolin (Nipple Cream), Needed?

I have both of these items on my registry still, since I have two more showers, but highly doubt anyone will buy them since they'd probably rather buy items for baby. My question is, are these items that I will not use at all, only use occasionally, or use all the time?

  • It totally depends on your boobs.  I'm a leaker and need nursing pads all the time.  Some people don't leak at all (lucky bishes).  It wouldn't hurt to have some on hand just in case.  Get the lanolin.  You'll want it especially early on for if/when your nips get sore.

Yes. Even though I didn't bf very long, I used those items.

  • Thanks ladies! Also, is there a particular brand you liked better of either one?

Lansinoh lanolin is great.  I like the tommy tippee disposable breast pads.  I also got a pair of lilypadz to try, but this is my first day with them, so I can't give you a review just yet.  I don't like the washable pads because they get wet and stay wet.

  • For pumping I like Earth Mama Angel Babies. I put in on the flanges which made much less friction. I used the regular Lanisoh lanolin as well, but I didn't really need it for long. I also had a prescription for Dr. Newman's Nipple Cream which is expensive because it wasn't covered by my insurance, but was also super awesome and necessary at the time.

  • I also used Lanisoh brand nursing pads too which worked fine, but then later I replaced them with washable ones which I prefer.

  • I've used Medela nursing pads, but switched to Target brand which are just as good, if not better. I leak all the time and it's so annoying. I also really like the Target brand breast milk storage bags. They have a double zipper on them which the Medela ones did not.

I'm kind of eh about lanolin, then again I had huge nipple/bf issues for the first 6 weeks. Lanolin stains clothing, so be sure to wear pads if you are going to use it. I much preferred using all-purpose nipple ointment to the lanolin.

  • It depends. After the first few weeks, I never leaked so I didn't need nursing pads. SIL is still nursing her 18 month old, and still wears them.

Lanolin was definitely needed IMO. It really soothed my nips while they were getting used to the constant action.

  • I leaked for about 3 months, mostly overnight. I bought washable pads and they were great. I used the lanolin in the beginning when I was sore, I haven't needed it for a long time now though.
