Cleaning The Shower Drain

I had to do this yesterday. Frankly I'm surprised I'm not bald. I yanked all the hair out but what is the best way to make sure the sucker is really REALLY clean until I work on it again?

Re: Cleaning The Shower Drain

  • Bleach kills pretty much everything. Just use a small amount and ventilate well. I don't know what a more "green" alternative would be.

If you think there could be more hair, you can use a liquid plumber solution. These are corrosive, though, so be sure not to spill it on any metal drain covers or the metal will pit and tarnish.

  • What I've always done is put some baking soda down the drain followed by vinegar.  After that has cleared, I follow it with boiling water.

I 100% agree with this technique. It has worked SO well with my bathroom sink which catches a lot of hair and gunk. Also, bonus points for it being cheap AND environmentally friendly. I hate using harsh chemicals when I don't have to!

  • I think I've used this recipe:

However, if you google baking soda/vinegar drain cleaning, a bunch of options will pop up. It also depends a little bit on what kind of drain cover you have. If it's the kind with the little holes, it might be harder to get this way to work.

  • I have really long, thick hair and I pull out wads of my hair every week when cleaning the bathroom.  My bathtub will literally stop up if I don't keep on top of it regularly lol.  I was always afraid to pour cleaners down the drain, because like a pp said, I am afraid to tarnish the metal or ruin the porcelain.  I will definitely be trying the baking soda method, though!!

  • Baking soda and vinegar! (1 cup each). Let is set for 10-15 minutes, then run hot water for 1-2 minutes. I use it all the time, it works great! Another thing to think about is getting a clog stopper, it will catch most of the hair.
  • There is a plastic thingy called a zip it you can get at hardware stores. You snake it down the drain and it pulls a crazy large amount of hair out. I then follow with the baking soda/vinegar and boiling water mixture.

  • Remove the shower drain cover. Pour the baking soda and then vinegar in the drain. Wait for few minutes and pour hot water in the drain. This will hopefully clean your drain.

  • The best way is to take the wad of hair out later and throw it away to avoid draining.
