Resignation help?

I have a few questions regarding my impending resignation.

First, I've never resigned from a job before. I am leaving this job where I have been since October 2006. I am going to be a stay-at-home mother, but would like to not burn any bridges because I am hoping to start a freelance business (I work in editorial) and would like to use several coworkers here for references.

So, how do I do it? Letter submitted to HR director first, then talk to my boss? Talk to my boss first, then do the formal submission? I work in a high-demand job, but our department is all like family. Which is good and I enjoy, but it also makes the lines feel a little blurred, if that makes sense.

Secondly, the timing. I have had a vacation planned for the 15th through the 27th. Due to this, work has been arranged so that my schedule would be clear during that time period. I've been thinking of giving my notice on 7/29 stating that my last day would be 8/12. That essentially would give my work 2 weeks notice of my leaving and another 2 weeks on top of that to fill my position in my absence where there will be no work (in case they don't fill the position within the 2 weeks that I've given notice), so they'll have more time before they NEED a new person in. Is that a rational and kind thing to do? Or should I wait until after vacation to give notice? That's not ideal (I pay my kids' childcare on a monthly basis, so I'd have to pay for all of Sept even if we don't use it), and I'd prefer not to work through the end of September (would be the rational thing to do IF I were to give notice after vacation--why leave work when my kids will still be in childcare), but if there's a reason why I should give notice after vacation, I'd be open to hearing it.

  • If it were me I would talk to your boss before notifing HR. If you guys are like a big family then she/he would probably appreciate hearing from you first as opposed to hearing from HR. Also that will give you a chance to explain that you leaving to be a SAHM and its not the job or the people. I think your timing would be good too.
