Short term disability insurance & maternity leave

Did anyone use short term disability insurance that was not offered through your employer during maternity leave. If so who was it through, how was the monthly premium and how long was it before they paid out?

Re: Short term disability insurance & maternity leave

  • I pay for a short term disability policy through Aflac that I purchased independently of work. It costs me 37.80 a month. I am pretty sure it covers maternity leave, though you might have a waiting period for that. When I hurt my back a few years ago and filed a claim I got the money very fast. I want to sag it was less than a week from the time I faxed in the forms.

I know this isn't what you were asking, but it's more in response to the other person's post. I got our STD (disability, not a disease--weird that it's the same acronym) through work and pay $28.22 a month to get the same amount I would get in my paycheck. We have to pay into it a full year--not sure if it's 12 months before pregnancy or before filing a claim.

They took forever to pay! I got my short-term and long-term disability (since I was on bed rest long enough beforehand) paid at the same time. I went on leave on November 28th and was out medically (after c-section) until March 3rd. I got my checks--nice big checks, but SUPER late--on February 23rd.

I would say look into the timeframe you get paid. We had enough savings that we didn't need it, but if you need it to replace your paycheck as soon as possible, look for the best company for that, if you can.
