Please tell me it's going to be okay...

I'm scared... a genetics councilor for my doctor just called to tell me that my chances of Downs Syndrome are 1:110, which is considered a high risk. I know it still means there is less than 1% chance of something being wrong, and I wouldn't consider terminating if the baby does have DS (unless there were other, life-threatening medical problems, etc.), but I'm scared. I have an ultrasound tomorrow morning, and we will discuss whether we will do an amnio or Harmony/MaterntiT21 after it.

Please tell me it's going to be okay....

  • Where did the 1 in 110 come from? Is it based on your age?

    Aaaaand, tears.  This is beautiful.

I've gotten that phone call (not DS, but a fatal disorder), so I feel you.  I'm so sorry and I understand your fear.  But know, you have a 1:110 chance of Downs, which means you have a 109:110 chance of everything being completely normal.  My thoughts and prayers are with you.

If you have questions about the amnio, let me know.  I had one.  I promise, it was WAY less of a big deal than I thought.

  • I've also had an amnio.  It was not what I expected, but it wasn't horrible.  It was more the situation we were in (just finding out about the heart defect an hour before) and it was very emotional.

I would opt for the amnio vs the other tests.  That is the only way to 100% know if he or she has Down's.  Good luck, I will be thinking of you.

Thanks, ladies. I do appreciate it.

We will probably be going with the amnio. Those of you who've done it, what can I expect?

Mine happened so fast. I got the call from the genetic counselor, went in 2 hrs later, and had an ultrasound. Baby was measuring way behind, so we did the amnio immediately. They stick a needle in your stomach, into the uterus, and draw out amniotic fluid. There are skin cells in the fluid and they can do a DNA test with it. I think it just took a few minutes. I mean, it wasn't fun, but it really didn't hurt. We paid for rushed results and had them 48 hrs later.

I also had a Rhogam shot that day because I am O-. That wasn't bad either.

My amnio came back normal, even though I had 1:5 odds of Trisomy 18. It turned out that I had a crappy placenta.

Good luck to you. I will be thinking of you.
