Need some divorce advice

So we both have agreed to file a no fault divorce.  I have heard that you can just use a mediator and no lawyers to keep costs to a minimum.  Does anyone have any experience with this or know who I can call (aside from an attorney)?  I have been looking online and either I'm googling wrong or I'm not entering the right key words because I'm just being directed to attorneys.

Thanks!

Re: Need some divorce advice

  • I don't know the laws here, as my divorce was in Louisiana. But I will say make sure you have your own representative of some nature. I didn't know I could change my name back asking as the judge stamped it so, but she didn't and I had to legally change my name, which would have cost.

  • Even though it is no-fault, it doesn't mean "no lawyer" divorce.

I suggest you contact the Women's Resource Center in Wayne. They have an incredible network and affordable one-on-one visits. You may want to schedule one of their 30 minute legal consultations with a family law attorney (they are only $10). At minimum, they can give you some guidance as to the representation you want in your proceedings.

  • i agree with above... I've seen no lawyer divorces (or attempts) in some of my cases and they are disasters.  you will both need lawyers.  I've heard of... never witnessed one myself.. cases where people agree to everything and go to the lawyer together and have one lawyer draw everything up... not really representing either but I'm not sure how that works.

i would definitely take the advice above and call and get recommendations on how to proceed

    good luck!

  • Maybe it's bc I'm married to a lawyer but I think it's really important to at least consult one. You need help navigating the system and filing. I know it sucks to think about putting out $ for it but its important esp when kids are involved to make sure you know what you're doing and to make sure all parties are clear on their responsibilities. It seemed to me from some of your fb posts that it has not been terribly amicable as of late and if that's true then you need some representation.

to piggyback... even amicable splits turn nasty when push comes to shove. A lawyer can be more objective and keep the two of you from fighting directly.  if you need a recommendation a few of my friends from law school are in family law in this area.
