months with 5 pay periods

Just curious, how do you use the 5th paycheck in months with 5 pay periods.

Re: months with 5 pay periods

  • I get paid twice a month, so I never get those--although I love February!

DH gets paid bi-weekly, so he sometimes gets three pay periods a month (not five, but similar). Generally, we don't do anything special with it, because we've already accounted for it in our monthly budget. In other words, I've already multiplied his paycheck by 26 and divided it by 12 to get his approximate monthly income in order to come up with our budget. But it sure does make finances pretty easy for that month and the next!

DH gets paid weekly, and I get paid bi-weekly.  We budget based on 4 paychecks a month for him and 2 paychecks a month for me.  When we get to those extra paycheck months we usually save it or use it for special expenses like vacation.

  • Yeah, we don't look at it "per paycheck" but we multiply by 26 pay periods and divide by 12 for monthly take home pay.

  • Sometimes I get three checks a month (I am paid bi-weekly).

We usually spend the extra money on a weekend trip. Not the most responsible thing to do, but it's just what we've always done with it. We don't have student loans or debts to pay down, so other than putting it in our e-fund, we can't think of anything else to do with it, really.

One gets spent on Christmas, one goes towards savings.

  • My husband and I both get paid (the same day) bi-weekly. There are occasions when we have a 3rd paycheck (like August!!) and we used t put the money away for our down payment, BUT we close on our house August 1st, so we will use the extra paycheck to buy furniture/replenish savings.
  • We don't account for them in our budget, so they feel like extra money.  My husband gets paid bi-weekly, so he gets 2 extra a year, and I get 4 extra a year.  Sometimes we use them to do something fun or buy something we've wanted for a while, but most of the time we put it in savings.  I love those months. :)  The ones that come in November usually go towards Christmas.

  • We also budget for 2 pays a month for me (bi-weekly) and 4 pays a month for H (weekly). So it's like extra money, and we are finally getting ahead enough to use it as such (and not just getting us back above the water line).

My extra pay twice a year goes to debt.  The one in may paid off my student loan Big Smile.  The one in Nov should pay off our last CC WOOHOO!

H gets paid weekly, but it depends how we use it.  In May we used it for vacation, day trips when he had his kids for a week.  His one in Aug will help off-set my decrease in pay due to furloughs.  Nov will go towards Christmas and going to NC to see his kids for Thanksgiving and Christmas (gas etc).  Hopefully next year we can use one or two towards debt/savings.

  • I get paid monthly, so it doesn't matter for me, but DH gets one a week on Thursdays. So when there is a 5th Thursday every third month, that stays in savings and gets split to go to the other months, so that every month we have the same monthly income amount.

  • We look at those months the same as months where our expenses tend to be lower (i.e. summer with lower energy bills); we tend to use the money to do renos. This year it's our master bathroom. Each time there's extra money in the budget, we do another step in the bathroom. This paycheque it was $1000 for the tile - ouch!
