Hospital Bags

So... I am in the process of starting to make lists out for myself. Things to do before Baby gets here. Things to pack in Baby's hospital bag, my bag....

What were the important things on your lists that you are so glad you didn't forget?

Is there anything you thought was a necessity but turned out you didn't need it?

Are there any good websites that have lists made up for hospital bags and such?

When did you or are you going to start to pack your bag?

TIA!

I've been throwing random things in my hospital bag, but don't plan on finishing it until I'm 37 weeks. All I've got so far are travel size toiletries and an XL phone charger.

I wasn't going to bring a diaper bag, but my SIL convinced me otherwise.

This might be a silly questions and I am kind of embarrassed for having to ask it, but what do you put in a diaper bag to bring to hospital. Just diaper and wipes? and a few sleepers? What else could baby need?

Honestly, I wouldn't even worry about a diaper bag.  The hospital provides diapers and wipes.  We brought some stuff for the baby in my regular hospital bag (clothes, paci, etc).

i brought some clothes and blankets. Thinks I thought might make it seem more like home if I didn't want to use the hospital stuff. So mostly just things to make me feel comfortable!

I am still packing my hospital bag (at 39 weeks) so I am no example! I put a lot of comfortable clothes, nursing bras, toiletries, a small blanket from home, phone and kindle chargers, head phones, camera, camera charger, and I am going to get snacks this weekend.

Also, we are bringing the car seat, snap and go, breast friend am boppy, which we are leaving in the car in case/for when we need them.

I took way more than I needed to the hospital. I would just stick to the basics and don't even take a diaper bag, that was a big waste. All you need for the baby is a going home outfit, the hospital provides the rest and sends you home with stuff.

I should say that if we have plenty of room left over in our hospital bag then I don't plan on bringing the diaper bag. If not, the diaper bag will have baby's clothes, nursing cover, etc....the extra space in the diaper bag could be used for everything the hospital provides that we are taking home (extra diapers, pads for me, nursing pads, etc).

At our hospital tour our instructor told us to take everything left over in our room when we are ready to go home....so I imagine we'll be leaving with more than we came with...

Oh, I definitely took everything home with us.  They gave me a plastic bag (like the ones that you put your clothes in) to bring everything home.

  • I brought a bag for myself and a bag for DH/baby. DH did not go home at all while we stayed at the hospital so it was nice for him to have clean clothes and deodorant. I also packed him snacks. For baby I packed the binkies I wanted to use and the bottles I wanted to use. I also packed her going home outfit (and an alternate boy going home outfit since we were team green).

I packed jammie pants but that was a bad idea. My mom ran to the store and got me some nightgowns because I couldn't wear pants for almost two weeks. I also had a robe which was awesome for walking the halls before and after. Slippers because hospital socks are itchy and suck but regular socks areslippery. I didn't use my kindle at all so that was a waste. I also brought my own big undies because I didn't want to wear the giant mesh ones they provide. Bring extra batteries for your camera and/or a charger for your phone. I love that we packed the video camera because we got video of her first bath.

There wasmore. I am an over packer but I didn't regret bringing any of it because we used it all. Oh and whoever suggested to get more of stuff before you leave do it. I got another full can of spray and a whole package of tucks pads which was awesome. I also got an extra peri bottle which was nice to keep in the diaper bag for the first few weeks.

    What is Epifoam?

It's this medicated foam that you put on a pad for your junk after a vaginal birth.  Best stuff ever.

  • I got an aeresol spray that was a pain relief spray...I think it had benzocaine in it. Anyway, you just sprayed it straight on your lady bits and it was amazing. I offered another can from the pharmacy when I ran out and I got the exact kind the hospital gave me but I had an allergic reaction to the kind from the store so something must have been different! So definitely get as much as you can from the hospital!

The one they give at my hospital is Dermoplast and I always ask for more.

You really don't need much while you are there as long as you're ok with using what the hospital provides. Some basic toiletries, a comfy outfit to wear home, clothes for baby to wear home, and for DH.  We also used our electronics (phones, laptop with camera to Skype, cameras, chargers/batteries).Other than that, I wore the hospital gown and mesh underwear.  I was only there for a day, so no biggie.  Plus with nurses coming in to check you all the time, it just makes things easier and there is no risk of ruining your stuff.

Also even though our cafeteria closed at 8, they have a lounge with free snacks at our hospital.  It had juices, crackers, sandwiches, applesauce, pudding, etc....so check with your hospital to see if you are thinking about bringing snacks.

  • I brought the diaper bag with 2 outfits for R. A newborn outfit and a 0-3 month outfit. The newborn one ended up being shorts instead of pants (which made me feel dumb but they were a weird length) so we put him in the newborn onesie and the 0-3 month pants. We used the diaper bag to shove all of the freebies they gave us. As for me, next time I'm bringing a hair brush, phone charger and a going home outfit for me. I didn't put on make up or use half of the junk we lugged to the hospital. I also had a csection though so I didn't need any if the stuff most use while in labor. I would recommend snacks though! I was so munchy in the hospital.
