Boobs and breast reduction - somewhat tmi.

Question for you ladies:

Did most of you experience breast pain or growth very early in pregnancy?  I haven't had those usual symptoms of sore nips, and I don't think they're growing yet.  I had a breast reduction about 10 years ago and I'm wondering how that surgery might affect any normal growth I should be experiencing.  FWIW, they did the apple coring technique, so sensation hasn't been affected.

  • I didn't have a reduction, but I never experienced sore boobs during pregnancy. Some women just don't have that symptom.

  • Boob soreness was my only pregnancy symptom early on.  They hurt like a mofo.  And they grew pretty early on as well.

  • No reduction here, but mine grew like crazy early (and it's pretty much the only spot I've wound up with having stretch marks too) and hurt a lot.

My cousin had a reduction about 8 years ago. She did wind up getting bigger during pregnancy, although I'm not sure when it started or if they hurt. She has had some issues with BFing and production. There's no way to know for sure it's tied to her reduction, but I know that it was mentioned as a possible side effect of the surgery.

ETA: I also didn't start developing the soreness until 6-7 weeks. You're really early so I wouldn't stress it. A lot of women don't have symptoms until later in the first tri (if at all!).

This is me. Now only the nipples are sore and dark. They've stayed pretty swollen though. Enough that my mom actually commented about it today lol

  • I didn't have any soreness until around 6 weeks, then they hurt so bad I could barely wear a bra. It hurt mostly in my armpits. At 8 weeks I jumped a whole size, from a C to a D, then at around 16 weeks I grew another size. So I'm now at a DD and starting to notice some weird lines and stretch marks, so I think they are slowly growing again. :(

My mom was the same way, so I would ask your mom what she experienced.

  • I had horrible breast pain. horrible. I had to wear a tight sports bra 24/7 until about 18 weeks.

It reminded me of when I was about 14 years old...

  • I don't have experience with a reduction, but I did not have soreness and I didn't have much growth at all until 3rd tri, and overall only went up 1 cup size.

  • I had a breast reduction 17 years before pregnancy.  My boobs were sore early on and did grow like a typical pregnancy (from what I've heard).  My scars turned the color of my areolas, but that is NOT typical for BR ladies.  I forget who else on here had a BR but her scars never changed (JennyLuvsCandy, maybe?)  Not much happened with my boobs that concerned me.  I was able to BF, too.

  • Jeep, if you want to continue this in a PM, that's fine, but did they use the apple coring technique with you as well?  I was so relieved when they told me about that technique because even though I was young, I knew then I wanted to try to BF when I had kids.

Everyone else - thanks for the info!

We don't need to PM... I don't mind talking about my boobs LOL

I have not heard the phrase "apple coring" but maybe it was the same thing they did for me.  They left the nipple attached (the veins, ducts, etc) so my breasts would still work.  Does that make sense?  Sounds like it might be the same thing.  They did say I might have trouble with BFing. Turns out I didn't have enough of a supply to EBF, but I did have twins and produced enough for 1/2 of their bottles, so that would have been the same as enough for one baby.  An LC told me that 5 years after a BR, breasts are closely back to normal function and she has seen many BR ladies that have produced very well.

    Hope that helps!

  • That's the technique they used with me, and by the time I give birth I'll be 10 years post BR.  Thank you so much for all the info - very informative and helpful!!
