How much does it cost to go to the movies?
I was reading one of the below posts on weekend spending and saw that someone wrote $8 to go to the movies. That has me wondering, what's the average price to go to the movies? How much where you live?
Here in Alberta to go to a mainstream movie (i.e. anything playing a blockbuster) on a regular day/evening with no discount is $12.99 for a regular show (more for 3D, etc.) per adult; however, we buy passes at Costco that include 2 adult admissions with 2 regular fountain sodas and a regular sized popcorn, and that comes to $25 plus tax = $26.25, plus more for 3D or special theatres with reserved seating.

$8 for a regular movie
I do not buy the popcorn, soda or other assorted treats they offer at ridiculous prices. I stick a box of Junior Mints purchased at the dollar store in my purse. I do not know if Costco offers any kind of movie deal (no Costco near me)
In Philadelphia, it's 11.00 for any show after about 10AM, which in practical terms means that it's 11.00 for almost everyone
I go to kids movies earlier in the day, then to lunch with a friend and her kids, but never adult features. Some theaters only run adult features after noon.
Through my job, we can purchase discounted tickets, which back when I started here almost 20 yrs ago, were like 3.00. Now, the discounted tix range from 7.00-9.00US depending on the theater chain.
I love the movies, but it's definitely an investment in a night out, and you don't want to catch a lousy one!
Here in ME we have a variety. In the city nearby for a night movie it is 9.75. We get a medium popcorn for 7 dollars and smuggle in a lg water bottle to share.
However if we are up for a drive we can go about 45 minutes north and a night movie is only 6. Medium popcorns are only 3.25 there.
In a nutshell we only take the trip north if friends are willing to meet half way and grab some bar food as well. We do a movie maybe every three months.

Our local theater costs $7(adult) for an evening showing. $5 before 4 pm.
Tuesday's are dollar off day.
I usually always buy popcorn. DH and I can go on a movie date for about $25, that includes tickets, snacks and drinks.
I believe it is $11.75 here but I have coupons from the Entertainment book (a huge coupon book we buy for $30 with coupons for all sorts of things from restaurants to bowling to mini golf to car washes) so I get $2 off each ticket for up to 2 tickets.
Plus I get the occasional movie theater gift card from parents at the day care so we rarely pay to go.
Also there is a drive in about 30 minutes away which always shows at least 2 shows, sometimes 3 and admission for that is $9/per person. We tend to spend a bit more on snacks there, but they have burgers, fries, funnel cakes and deep fried oreos!
I think it's $11.75 for anything after 11am, and before that it's $7. Anything in IMAX or 3D adds another $3-$4 I think (we rarely buy those). Occasionally the dinner theatre (you can order dinner/drinks while you're watching the movie) will have a special for 2 tickets for $10 or a groupon deal, but that place is 40 minutes away so we end up spending more money on gas and usually get dinner/drinks (add another $30 or so minimum).
We rarely buy anything at the concession stands since we don't drink soda, but on the off chance we do buy popcorn and bottled water it still costs us $10+, but the popcorn usually serves as our dinner for the evening
.
It's expensive to go out nowadays! I can't imagine if we had kids...I remember going to the dollar theatre with my mom when I was younger, but I haven't seen one of those places in years!

"You know you're in love when you don't want to fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams." - Dr. SeussI live on Long Island and it's the same here too. We have discount through my job though where we can get tickets for $8-9....H & I don't really eat popcorn but I do smuggle in a small bit of candy in case we get the urge to have something sweet,
