How much does it cost to go to the movies?

I was reading one of the below posts on weekend spending and saw that someone wrote $8 to go to the movies. That has me wondering, what's the average price to go to the movies? How much where you live?

Here in Alberta to go to a mainstream movie (i.e. anything playing a blockbuster) on a regular day/evening with no discount is $12.99 for a regular show (more for 3D, etc.) per adult; however, we buy passes at Costco that include 2 adult admissions with 2 regular fountain sodas and a regular sized popcorn, and that comes to $25 plus tax = $26.25, plus more for 3D or special theatres with reserved seating.

Re: How much does it cost to go to the movies?

  • To take our family of 4 (the ages of my kids in the tickers below is off, they are older) and the included snacks from our pre-purchased passes at Costco plus the admission for Grandpa comes to $63! Plus any snacks for Grandpa, when he comes out with us, it's our treat (he'll be staying with us when we go see the movie). Over $60 to take our kids to see Planes (they've been begging to see it since the trailer came out), with fountain pop and popcorn, that seems crazy, no?
  • No less than 11 per ticket, unless you do a matinee for 9.75. IMAX and 3D are as much as 17 per.
  • $8 for a regular movie

I do not buy the popcorn, soda or other assorted treats they offer at ridiculous prices. I stick a box of Junior Mints purchased at the dollar store in my purse. I do not know if Costco offers any kind of movie deal (no Costco near me)

In SF it's like $14 for 3D, $10 for a regular show.  But my husband and I are early risers, so we like to hit the matinees at around 9 am - it costs only $6.75 then!

  • In Philadelphia, it's 11.00 for any show after about 10AM, which in practical terms means that it's 11.00 for almost everyone :)  I go to kids movies earlier in the day, then to lunch with a friend and her kids, but never adult features. Some theaters only run adult features after noon.

Through my job, we can purchase discounted tickets, which back when I started here almost 20 yrs ago, were like 3.00.  Now, the discounted tix range from 7.00-9.00US depending on the theater chain.

I love the movies, but it's definitely an investment in a night out, and you don't want to catch a lousy one!

  • Here in ME we have a variety. In the city nearby for a night movie it is 9.75. We get a medium popcorn for 7 dollars and smuggle in a lg water bottle to share.

However if we are up for a drive we can go about 45 minutes north and a night movie is only 6. Medium popcorns are only 3.25 there.

In a nutshell we only take the trip north if friends are willing to meet half way and grab some bar food as well. We do a movie maybe every three months.

  • Our local theater costs $7(adult) for an evening showing. $5 before 4 pm.

    Tuesday's are dollar off day.

I usually always buy popcorn. DH and I can go on a movie date for about $25, that includes tickets, snacks and drinks.

  • I believe it is $11.75 here but I have coupons from the Entertainment book (a huge coupon book we buy for $30 with coupons for all sorts of things from restaurants to bowling to mini golf to car washes) so I get $2 off each ticket for up to 2 tickets.

Plus I get the occasional movie theater gift card from parents at the day care so we rarely pay to go.

Also there is a drive in about 30 minutes away which always shows at least 2 shows, sometimes 3 and admission for that is $9/per person. We tend to spend a bit more on snacks there, but they have burgers, fries, funnel cakes and deep fried oreos!

  • We tend to get groupons for a movie theatre near us, so we pay $5 per ticket which are good any time. Otherwise regular movie tickets around us are about $10 and 3d/ special ones are up to $20 per person.

  • $6 for a regular movie ($4.25 for the matinee).  They sell popcorn and soda combos starting at $2 (small soda/bag of popcorn).  So if DH & I go to the matinee & each get a popcorn/soda it is $12.50 total.

  • I think it's $11.75 for anything after 11am, and before that it's $7. Anything in IMAX or 3D adds another $3-$4 I think (we rarely buy those). Occasionally the dinner theatre (you can order dinner/drinks while you're watching the movie) will have a special for 2 tickets for $10 or a groupon deal, but that place is 40 minutes away so we end up spending more money on gas and usually get dinner/drinks (add another $30 or so minimum).

We rarely buy anything at the concession stands since we don't drink soda, but on the off chance we do buy popcorn and bottled water it still costs us $10+, but the popcorn usually serves as our dinner for the evening :).

It's expensive to go out nowadays! I can't imagine if we had kids...I remember going to the dollar theatre with my mom when I was younger, but I haven't seen one of those places in years!

  • We live in the midwest, and the regular price tickets out here are around $9. We try not to actually pay that, though. We'll usually go in the 4-6pm window, when they cost $6.25 (matinee is before 4, something like $7.50). We usually sneak our own candy in and share a soda, so it costs the two of us around $16-17 total.

  • In CT, our tickets are $10.25 I believe for adults. 3D tickets are $13 or so. I can get them through my job for $6 ea, or my health insurance has a website where we can get free tickets for points we collect for staying healthy (regular physicals/vaccines, not smoking, health weight etc), so I haven't paid for a movie in a long time. I also smuggle in my own drink/snacks that I bring from home or get at a gas station. And that is how you enjoy a cheap movie out :o)
  • I live in Northeast Ohio and evening prices are about $9.50 per person. And a Medium pop (which could qualify as a super sized drink) and a small pop corn (which is actually small) is about $8.00. We don't go often, we usually wait until we've gotten a gift card or now we start going on Tuesday for $5.00 night
  • Im also in CT and the prices vary, but I would say around 11.00 each at least. I get movie tickets through costco which are 2 for 15 though, and always smuggle in my own drinks/food haha. Or go to target and get a $1 popcorn and smuggle that in.
  • It about $12 per ticket for a regular playing movie time and I am in Northern, NJ. I recently discovered I could buy tickets at BJ's, 2 for $16, which is such a better deal. I think the current prices are so crazy, especially at the concession stand, I have no idea why anyone would purchase those items at the prices they charge!
  • $8 for matinee, $10 for normal ticket price. It always goes up though. Gas station or dollar store for candy if I want it, usually never buy drinks/popcorn there, I'll bring it from home in my giant purse!

  • In GA it is about $10-12/adult, but we haven't been since our kids were born 3 years ago! We love Redbox and Netflix. Just can't pay $20+ for a movie we don't know if we'll like.

I live on Long Island and it's the same here too. We have discount through my job though where we can get tickets for $8-9....H & I don't really eat popcorn but I do smuggle in a small bit of candy in case we get the urge to have something sweet,

  • I think it was over $10/ticket the last time we went to a regular movie theater, but I'm not even sure, we do it so rarely.  Our last trip to the movies was around $35, but that was at a cool local theater than has $3 tickets for second run movies, and serves real food and alcohol in the theater (so the $35 included tickets, dinner, and a glass of wine).  It was pretty awesome and I look forward to going back.
