Marriage Counseling - advice

I have a great marriage and a great husband, but we're not without our issues. We go through patterns of constant fights/bickering/frustration, and then months of nothing but love, then fighting again. Nothing too over the top... however, during the periods that we fight we almost always say we should see a counselor to help us learn how to handle our conflicts and differences. Then, when the fighting ends we forget that we ever even thought about it.

Anyways, I feel like even though we're in a period of no fighting right now, we should still look into the counseling.

My question is - have any of you seen a counselor? How did you figure out who to see? When I look online it is completely overwhelming!

 Thanks!

Re: Marriage Counseling - advice

  • There is this book called Love&Respect that you guys should try. It is Christian/biblical based but its good for learning good communication so the fights are less

  • Start with your insurance. Does it cover any counseling services? Do they have specific providers they work with?

If you don't get any coverage through insurance, then

    1. ask your friends

    2. look for referral services where you can give them more info about what you're looking for and they help narrow it down

    3. search by specific words more relevant to your situation (communication, couples counseling,  marital counseling, etc)

There are some good books out there (though being an atheist I tend to avoid the Christian ones!) but it's invaluable to have a living breathing human who can keep you both accountable and point out things you can't see.
