We need to get a computer, our's is almost 7 years old and while still good, slowing down, and a lot of the programs that we need to purchase in the future, won't work on it.
I'm debating between 7 and 8, but don't know if there is a big enough difference between them to warrant spending more on the 8.
thanks for any input :-)

Re: Windows 7 vs 8...input
DH has a Windows 7 laptop and I have a Windows 8. We both dislike 8. Its very app based and difficult to learn (compared to XP and 7 which have more similarities administratively speaking). My take on 8 is that its like a tablet or smartphone. There is no start button - there is a "Windows Key" that takes you to the center where you can scroll through the different things you want to open. I only have it because I couldn't find ANY Win 7 in my area, and my XP wasnt compatible with the newest MS Office. I would suggest going to a computer store and hoping on both operating systems you are looking at and see how you like the feel - do things you normally would, hop on the internet, open the calculator or whatever things you are used to using the computer for.
I will be honest - if my Windows 8 laptop had a touch screen I might find it easier to use BUT I like 7 much better. I do know they are supposed to be sending out patches and such to fix some things that really bug people about 8 - if 7 is available where you are AND cheaper then I would jump on that.
8 has a lot of compatibility issues, as far as gaming goes. Don't know if you/your hubby are into that, but I think that it's to release an operating system that has issues with currently existing software. There's no point in buying a new OS if you can't use it until everything you'd do on it is updated, lol.
Like PP said, 8 is optimized for the touch screen audience. It's flashy, it's sleek, but when it comes down to it, 7 is so much better. I'm guessing you're currently using Win. XP, which is a great OS btw. c: I used to have an old clunky PC with XP on it, and loved it to death. Mom gave me her old laptop with Vista on it, and...well, I hated it. Vista sucked. Then I found out that the testing version of Win. 7 was around, and threw that on. Ever since then, I've been in love with 7, and I don't plan on giving it up any time soon.
My vote goes with 7 - it'll be much easier to be productive on your comp with it, and it's generally just a VERY user-friendly OS.
My issues with my laptop aside, there's a lot of software and programs that do not work with 8, they may in the future but not right now.
It sounds like everyone kind of agrees on 8 - what did you end up getting or have you not picked one out yet?
I have heard that if you have the actual desktop computer thats not an issue, but for those of us using laptops the its super annoying. A slight touch of the side of the mouse-pad area brings up stuff and switches apps. I have so many gripes about Win 8 I could go on for hours.
I am ok with windows 8, but I had to get used to avoiding certain drags of the mouse, as mentioned above. It takes getting used to, but I actually like the hidden features. I feel like it's more organized than a desktop. With windows 8 you have the choice of using it in it's compact form, or switching to the desktop version. I say it's like having 2 in 1.
