Anyone have any idea what would be involved in moving from tx to canada? DH and I aren't happy here, we don't want our kids raised here and we think Canada would be a better place for us. The problem is we have a mortgage, new car loan, cc debt, and student loans. DH is also under contract for the next two years. He works at a university here and the job market it tough so it is unlikely that we would be able to go to a new job in Can. Anyone done this before? Any tips, suggestions, or places to point us to set up a plan to execute this move with the next 5 years?
Re: Ridiculous question
Well, I mean...If the job market is tough wherever you would plan to move in Canada, I would say that the first thing you guys need to do is have him start looking for jobs and interviewing. However, it seems like you can't really do much else until he is able to get out of the contract and has a new job lined up. Once that happens, things will get complicated. He might need to move up there without you while you try to sell the house in the states. In the meantime, you could work on getting rid of your CC debt. I would imagine that your student and car loans won't really be an issue as long as you keep paying them off once you move.
I don't understand how you're going to make this work if you're saying "unlikely that we would be able to go to a new job in Can."
You have to be employed, correct? The PP suggested starting to look now, but you say it'll still be virtually impossible. So, a career change is the only thing that seems to make any sense...Do you have a career that will be more easily transferable to CA?
First thing you should research is permits for moving into the country. Will you need to get a VISA or an Canadian equivelant to a green card. Also check with school systems up there on what paperwork would be required to enroll your children into the school system there and still get credit for all the schooling they have received so far. Try googling, moving to Canada, or contact the Canadian Embassy. They can probably help give you the proper information.
I knew someone once that moved to another country, got married, but never got the proper paperwork to become a resident (visa/greencard). She flew back home to the states to visit family and when she went back, they stopped her at passport control and 48 hours later, she was deported. The mess she had to go through to get back to her husband, oh boy.
Any money that you've put into 401K can transferred to an account I'm sure there, but you will lose the money paid into Social Security. So you may want to check into what Canada's benefits are for people once they retire, like do they have their own version of medicare?
Another thing to check into, will you need to do anything special to your cars for them to meet their requirements for emissions? Different countries have different rules for how cars are set up.
Like one other PP said, I wouldn't move up there unless you have job(s) set up to you know you have income. You don't want to go up there, no income, no home, that can't be a better situation then what you have in Texas.
In regards to your bills, just because you move to a different country, you will still be responsible for your debts. So I would work on getting those resolved. In regards to your house, get it ready for putting it on the market. Making sure that colors are neutral, anything that needs to be updated that you can afford is updated, bascially start getting it ready over the next 5 years to put on the market so when people see it, they will want it and it will sell fast.
Good luck!!
