DO you plan your meals out for the week?

Re: QOTD 8/5

  • Yup, but I usually make 1-2 meals at the beginning of the week and we have leftovers for the rest of the week.  I also have some quick dinners in the freezer in case we run out of food (like when H really likes it and has like 4 servings).

I made a binder of recipes and they are all in plastic covers.  That way when I pull them out to cook, they don't get messy.  If I make a new recipe, I print it out and if we like it, I put it in the binder.  So before we go grocery shopping, I go in there, or pinterest for recipes and write out our list.

  • We do. We put everthing on a white board of what we are making that week. I don't usually cook with recipes. So, I make the shopping list on Saturday and then we shop on Sunday after church. Sometimes we switch the days we were planning on making something, but we almost always stick to the plan.

Every few months a group of girlfriends and I do a meal swap, so I usually have something in the freezer from that that I can throw together if we are in a pinch. Or, if I'm out of town, H can grab something out of there and heat it up so he isn't eating fast food.

I keep saying I'm going to do freezer meals, but I need a bigger freezer.  Right now mine is full of frozen blueberries and chicken haha.We need to do a freezer clean out!  And/or get a separate freezer for the basement (which I want if I BF).

  • I usually plan one or two meals.  I wish I was more organized to plan them all.  Usually DH makes a couple of meals a week.  He's skilled only in the grill and boxed dinners.

  • I will plan a couple of meals in advance so that I buy any ingredients i need during our weekly shopping trip. I'm lucky if I can cook without being interrupted. I've been trying to do more things in the crock pot, and H only grills which is helpful if i remember to defrost something!

  • I change my mind frequently, so I can't plan too far in advance.  I usually plan 1-2 days at a time and shop then.  I have a number of grocery stores near by, so it's not bad going to the store every other day.  I'm pretty good with only buying what I went to the store for and not a ton of extras.  It gets hard on weekends because H and I are both lazy and usually fall into bad habits then.  I think meal planning would be good for us then.

I was going to ask a food related question today, but I am going to make a separate post.

  • We tried the whole "meal plan" thing and it just didn't work for us.  When I tried to make a list based off recipes, we ended up buying things that we wouldn't used often and spent more money at the grocery store.

Now that we are dieting and trying to eat more naturally, we have a set list of foods that we buy.  It's always chicken breast, ground turkey, sirloin steak, and sometimes pork loin.  We always buys tons of veggies that we can either steam or grill and we buy fruits that we can snack on.  We'll sometimes pick up a new marinade or sauce to change things up.

  • We're big on meal planning and I love to cook! We're both so busy, that we only have time to go grocery shopping once a week. We try to plan everything out on Friday and go grocery shopping then (the grocery store is usually dead on Fri nights and all the produce is freshly restocked for Saturday morning). We're big on organics and minimally processed foods (aka higher grocery bill, unfortunately). In the fall and winter, we do a big pot of soup for the week plus some other meals. In the summer, we do a lot of grilled chicken and veggies. I try to make the more complicated or time consuming meals on the weekend so that we can have them for leftovers during the week along with some quick meals. Our biggest problem is that I don't eat a lot of meat and DH is definitely a carnivore! If he wants a steak, I'll make a portabello mushroom for myself and we're both happy.

  • We haven't in a while. It's better when we do, but I need to get better about it. I'm hoping I'll get better once we move.
