Discuss: Super Bowl and revitalization
First of all, what do you know about the revitalization effort for the city because of the Super Bowl?
What are your opinions on the development plans?
Move along, nothing to see here.....
Re: Discuss: Super Bowl and revitalization
I'm beside myself with the possibilities for the area. While I grew up in a 'burb, I frequented the east side and had many friends in the area. I have a soft spot for Woodruff Place, Irvington and the like, so I can't wait to see those areas to develop.
I'm also excited for Tech. My mom is a teacher there and I'm really excited for the students.
I heard news about a co-op possibility and I think that it is a fabulous idea!
I really love how far Indy has come over the years in areas like Fountain Square, Mass Ave., etc. where at one point you really didn't want to be in those areas and now they are hot spots
I heard about it on the news this evening..I think it is a great idea. I have issues w/ it being tied to the Superbowl....and I admit, I don't know what they said about why doing it around the Superbowl. "Can't they just do it without it being in conjucntion w/ sports??"
The co-op is a group formed on smaller indiana .org, or at least they have a group on smaller indiana. I think the co-op looks like a fabulous idea...and a bargin to become a founding member right now.
I also don't really remember a time when I wouldn't have been on Mass Ave and/or Fountain Square...thinking back at least 20 years. I still went to Brother Junipers on Mass Ave all the time. We also went to shop at Stouts all the time as well.
Left you a message on SI, looks like it was really an event posted on SI. Here is the blog link... http://www.indyfoodcoop.blogspot.com/
I think it sounds like a very cool group. My only thought is how are they giving back to the neighborhood/community?
Jenn, it's paired with the Super Bowl because it's called the "NFL Legacy Project"- so their goal when they come into a city is to leave it a better place than it was before. So, in addition to the practive facility being built at Tech, they are truly investing in the neighborhoods. I live on the near eastside and am involved in the group that helped form the Quality of Life plan that is being used to revitalize these areas. There is SO much going on over here- I don't even have the space or time to list it all here. But not only is this project huge, but different neighborhood associations (mine included, Emerson Heights) have active groups working on other projects like the Emerson Avenue Corridor Gateway Project. Then there is the Pennsy trail extention, the bike lanes from here to downtown being added, new retail and restaurants coming in - in Irvington and all around. We have a new cafe at Bosart and 10th St. The neighborhood assocations successfully closed down an eyesore of a strip club on 10th/Emerson- never to be opened again at this location or anywhere within our neighborhoods' boundaries. I could go on and on...
My short answer is that Im' THRILLED for this project to happen and for the work to begin. And if I didn't already live here, I'd be rushing to buy a house in the area (if I was looking) because prices are creeping up already on the housing stock in my neighborhood. When we moved in 5 years ago- you wouldn't have paid more than just over 90K for a 3bd 2 bath home- those size homes are selling for 105K plus now (if they've been kept up or remodeled). Real bargains are still there though, great price - a little TLC..
Sorry, I'm totally rambling. Yes, I think it's great
E, I was hoping you'd see this post and reply! I figured you were involved with it given your activity with your neighborhood association, but I didn't want to assume.
WOO HOO!
Emily!
I am glad they are doing it...and getting things revitalized! I guess I get troubled by getting/giving money in the name of the NFL..but then that is where the deep pockets are...it kills me that we pours so much money into sports venues/areas....then help others. Sorry..guess I just have NFL issues...not a good thing to have this morning!!! Don't get me wrong, I love sports and enjoy the games, we have season tickets to the Colts, Indians and a mini Pacer package as well...but I like to see us think of helping the community first, then maybe get the local franchises involved, not the other way around. If that makes any sense...and I know I don't know that much about it...YET!!
