We're moving to a new office building, and it's an upgrade that we're all excited about.
In our current building there's a small adjacent outdoor parking lot and most people end up parking wayyyy up the street. Not a big deal but people still complain when they don't get one of the coveted spots. The new building features an adjacent side lot PLUS a parking garage, so . As it turns out there aren't quite enough spots inside the garage for everyone, so some people (1/10th of employees roughly) must park in the side lot.
Management decided that all full-time employees get garage spaces according to seniority and all others must park in the side lot. So, part-timers and new people don't get covered spots but they're still close to the building.
My coworker is livid. She's been here longer than most people but switched to part time a year ago... so, no garage space for her.
I think she's being petty-- it's an awesome job and a company that's good to us in many ways, and working part time has its benefits and drawbacks.
Would you be pissed if you were in her shoes?
Re: Work story: is this fair/would you be mad?
Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
It sounds totally fair. Why, if she's there only half time, should she get one of the better spots?
I just have no sympathy. I think having free parking at your work is a privilege/benefit, not a right. I take public transportaiton to work. If I wanted to drive (and I may have to start once baby comes), I would have to pay $200 a month.
I'd definitely be annoyed, but I'd have no real room to complain.
rules are rules!
I'm sure internally I would feel a bit pissy if I knew I had seniority but nothing I could do if I had chosen to go part-time.
Ditto! I understand being annoyed because she's been there longer, but presumably the company is paying for the spots. Why should they pay for a spot that will only be used part-time?
I'm jealous of anyone with free parking. To park 2.5 blocks away, outside, would cost me $20/week. To park in the structure that's attached to my building would cost me $55/week. No f-ing way.
As someone who doesn't have ANY parking (well it's $300 per month!), I think it's totally redic to get upset that some people get covered and some people get uncovered parking. You freaking get parking at all part-time lady!!!!!!!
And yes, it's totally fair to assign parking by senority.
Wait, the ancillary lot is covered? ?Why is she even upset?
?
Edit- Nevermind I read the original post incorrectly. ?Still, I agree with everyone else. ??
OK yeah that I would be mad about.
Originally I was going to say that I could understand why the lady was upset; however, she is now a part-timer and has to deal with it. In addition, they couldn't make an exception for her despite the fact that she had been working there so long.
Now I see that they have already made an exception. I wouldn't blame her for making a stink now.
