What to wear to graduation?

My BIL is graduating from Auburn tomorrow and I have no idea what to wear to the ceremony.  DH said, "Wear a skirt and some stockings."  (This led to a conversation about stockings being for little girls and pantyhose/tights being for women. Then he says, "Well, whatever.  They're socks that go all the way up" LOL).  Anyway, It will be about 70 degrees there.  I don't want to look like I'm going to work and want to wear comfy shoes in case we have to walk.  Any ideas?

Re: What to wear to graduation?

  • don't over think it. I had a warm spring graduation, and people wore skirts but not super dressy clothes. Since it's December but crazy weather, I would wear nice pants and shoes that work for you, and just a dressy ?top. ?Ya know-nice, but not ?necessarily church clothes either, if that makes sense.

  • I've only been to ones in spring and summer down there. I wore a black sleeveless dress and heels to one and a ankle length blue jean skirt and sleeveless sweater top with slide on to another. I know I went to one or two more but can't remember. I've seen people in all kinds of things. I would wear whatever you're comfortable in. Do you have dress you could throw a sweater on over if you get cold and some comfy shoes?

And, tell E it's pantyhose. Tights make me think of little girls and stockings make me think of old ladies. ;-)

  • Nice pants and a pretty top suitable for the weather with some fairly comfortable shoes would be my choice.
  • I have been to the December graduation at Auburn before and most women wore black pants and a nice top.  I would definately wear comfortable shoes.  When I went I wore black dress pants, ballet flats, and a three quarter length shirt.

ditto! Just don't over think it! At my graduation I saw people wearing everything from jeans and t-shirts(although not exactly appropriate) to skirt/pantsuits.

  • Hey!  We're back home now.  I thought I'd be able to log on in the morning before we left but didn't have time.  I ended up wearing a thin plum long-sleeved top, brown tweed knee-length flare skirt, brown tights, and brown knee-high flat boots.  I wore a tank underneath my top and ended up wishing I didn't because I started sweating while walking from the parking lot to the Colosseum.
