what kind of car do you have?
it looks like we are going to have to trade in my car and get a new vehicle. any suggestions? i am not sure exactly what we are looking for. we were going to get the civic, but i am dragging my heals..we have a honda pilot, so we are good on a 4 wheel drive vehicle. we would like a family car that is good on gas. any suggestions? what kind of car do you drive and what do you love about your car? other cars we looked at were the toyota prius, honda accord, honda crv, toyota matrix. thanks so much.
Re: what kind of car do you have?
i have a toyota corolla, and i'm biased (my whole fam has toyotas) so i'd go with the prius. do they have 4 doors? it was a must for me because i hate taking things out of the backseat from a 2door car.
i joke that i have the 'cheap edition' (CE) but i really love not paying a million dollars for gas. and being able to park in small spaces. good luck with your search!

I have a civic and I looooove my car! It was especially great during the summer when gas was $4 a gallon. It's a 2004, has almost 100,000 miles on it and I have never had a problem with it. My car will be paid off in 6 months, so I'll be keeping it for as long as she will run!
I do understand your wanting a 4 wheel drive and truthfully my civic is not the best in the snow because it's so light. I have been thinking my plan for my next car (if not a honda because I looove them) will be a subaru. My step sister and her husband drive them. Even the sedan stationwagon's are all wheel drive. My brother in law has driven honda's and acura's' and said that the subaru is his favorite car. They are a little more pricey, but with the economy you might be able to get a good deal on one.
Good luck with whatever you decide!
I have an 06 chevy cobalt SS, but it isn't a family car...it's a coupe with power and speed. haha
DH wants me to trade it in on a CR-V or an Accord when we have a family.
I have a mazda 3, and it is great for gas mileage (I drive all highway for work I get 32-34 on average) and it?s an affordable car. It isn?t the best in bad weather but it works fine for me since we only have about 4 days a year where I actually have to drive in snow. I was just telling DH this weekend how happy I am with the car and I have had it for over 2 years and plan to have it for many more years.
I have an '06 Ford Escape which I love! It's not a 4 wheel drive. I figured that we really didn't need it unless we lived in a snowbelt. It's been good to us. It gets about 22-23 mpg city and up to 27 highway.
DH has an old '95 Toyota Corolla. It has over 130k miles on it and still going strong. The only thing we've had to do to it is routine stuff. He's driving that thing 'till it dies. Toyotas last forever and have a good resell value. My aunt also had an old Corolla and it had over 200k miles on it. They recently traded it in for another Toyota. That's all she and her family buys. Hondas are also good cars.
If I had to go out today and buy another car like a sedan (used or new), I'd look at Toyota or Honda.
I currently have an 03 Honda Accord Coupe. I would go with either a Honda or Toyota (or obviously an Acura or Lexus since they are the higher end of those two companies). I think they are by far the best 2 car companies in terms of quality for the price. I had a honda civic before my Accord and I absolutely adored it. I know a pp mentioned about snow and having some problems but I've had studded snow tires for both of my honda's now and I've never had too much trouble unless the snow was rediculously deep. DH and I test drove a new Accord sedan v6 back in the summer and it was awesome and has a great feature that it only runs the v6 when it really needs it (or something to that effect) which means the mileage is better than the older v6 models.
We got me a '09 Subaru Legacy in July and I love it. AWD was a must for me due to my commute. It's a 4 cylinder (which took a little getting used to me for me, since I always had a V6), but it averages 26-27 mpg. It may be a little smaller than you're looking for, but if you have Pilot, it may not be an issue.
I feel safe in it, and it's the nicest car I've ever owned! We haven't tried to put the baby seat in it yet, though.
One of the other selling points about the Subaru we bit on is resale - we'll never be underwater on this car. They retain value so well in this area.
I have a Toyota Camry and I love how reliable it is. It has a smooth ride and has needed almost 0 work for several years now. I think my family also tends to be a Toyota family, my parents have an Avalon and my brother just got a Rav4. I personally prefer the Camry to the Accord but that could change with each model, I think in general they are both very good.
I agree with Jen, my favorite car companies are Toyota, Honda, Accura or Lexus. Those are the ones that I would consider most for myself in the future, mainly for how long they last and how well they work.
I'm glad to hear you like your Pilot, I would love something like that in the future for the 4WD.
I'm late to this, but we're a Honda family... I drive a Civic and DH drives an Accord. I would highly recommend either car - DH's is an '00 and has never needed anything beyond basic maintenance and drives really nicely, although it's not the best in snow - he says the car's weight isn't evenly distributed, which is what causes the problem.
Anyway, my Civic is an '07, and it handles like a DREAM in snow and ice. We have a pretty steep hill up to our driveway and in the first ice storm last year I was genuinely concerned that I wasn't going to make it up, but the Civic didn't even so much as hesitate or slip at all. I was floored.
We average 24-26 mpg in the Accord (28+ mpg on long trips); 35-37 mpg in the Civic. We're banking on putting a car seat or two into the Civic, and have comfortably fit 5 adults in both cars.
GL & happy car shopping! You'll be able to get a killer deal at this time of year!
... every single day of forever.
We have a 2006 Honda Accord sedan - which I love. It gets good mileage and has a lot of room.
We also have a 2007 Honda Civic Hybrid - gets good mileage, but it's smaller inside.
