in my post below i saw you have a 2007 honda civic hybrid.  we were looking at the civic and the civic hybrid.  i test drove the regular civic a couple weeks ago and i am going to test drive the hybrid on friday.  i am looking at the 08 regular civic and the 09 hybrid.  how does it drive and how to do you like your car?  can a car seat fit comfortably in the back?  anything else (good and bad) you can tell me?  thanks so much!!!!

  • *BIP*  I have an '07 Civic EX.  We debated back and forth about the regular Civic vs. the Hybrid, but ultimately decided to go with the regular version.  DH really wanted the Hybrid, but it just wasn't a practical option for us for a variety of reasons, and we opted for the EX after much discussion with various salesmen at different dealerships and plenty of research on DH's part.

One of the biggest points for us was that we bought the car with the intention of keeping it as long as possible - the current batteries in the Hybrids are still so relatively new that automakers aren't totally sure of how long they'll last, and our salesman pointed out that at this point in time, replacing the battery is an extremely expensive repair.  One would expect the cost to go down in the future, but nothing's guaranteeing that, and it held the potential of being a very costly repair since the car would most likely outlive the battery and we intended to keep the car until we couldn't anymore.  He also indicated that he felt some of the automakers were also going to be working towards hydrogen cars, rather than the hybrids - and sure enough, Honda released their first, the FCX Clarity, in CA last summer.

There were also some more basic reasons than maintenance and repair cost - 95% of my driving is highway, so it made less sense to spend the extra money on the Hybrid when we wouldn't necessarily see it as much returned in gas costs as we would have by a good deal of town driving.  We also preferred the 60/40 fold-down seats in the EX (Hybrid's back seats don't go down) and the additional room in the trunk of the EX.  We also wanted some of the superficial extras, like a sunroof, which we couldn't get on the Hybrid.

As for the car itself... I absolutely LOVE my Civic. :)  It handles like a dream in snow/ice, has a lot of pep on the highway and a sporty, fun handling, but still feels like a solid, reliable car.  DH loves it for its safety features - I have airbags literally the ENTIRE way around the inside of my car, and it gets excellent safety ratings.  That was actually why we bought my car - my previous car had airbags, but nothing like this, and when I was hired at my current job and acquired a decent commute, DH decided it was high time to put me into the safest, most reliable, most gas-economical car he could find.

For being a small car, it actually is very roomy inside, and we've comfortably fit 5 adults on several occasions.  I'm 5'9" and my height is all in my legs, and I have no problem with leg room in the backseat.  I have heard that fitting in a rear-facing car seat can be tricky, but is possible with the right maneuvering and right car seat.  We're planning to buy something bigger and use this as a secondary car when we start a family, so we're not overly concerned with that issue.

Bottom line?  I would recommend my car in a heartbeat to anyone looking for a comfortable, roomy, gas-friendly sedan.  I can honestly say that there is nothing I dislike about my car, and would buy another in a heartbeat. :)

  • Well, I think Ashlee answered that quite nicely.  I didn't know some of the stuff she mentioned.

But to answer your question...we love the Hybrid.  Of course, it's not as powerful as our Accord, but we feel we are doing something for the environment by having a Hybrid.  A car seat fits in good also. We have the Graco snap and go seat and we haven't tried the Evenflo Convertible seat yet.  You can only have one other adult in the backseat though with the car seat in.  Civics are smaller than Accords, so we use the Accord when we are traveling and have to carry a lot of stuff.

We love Hondas - we have two!

  • Sara, you wouldn't believe how much research my H did before buying this car.  I listened to many, many lectures on the pros and cons of each type in the weeks preceding the purchase.  I know more than I'd ever care to about the hybrids vs. the regular Civics. Stick out tongue

And we're the same way - we have an Accord and a Civic and (currently) wouldn't have it any other way. :)
