Re: (#) How is everyone doing so far in 2009?
I want to lose 120 lbs this year. I know that's a lot, but that means 10 pounds a month, which isn't horrible. I'd really be satisfied with at least 50 in the entire year, considering how long I had been at my first starting weight, and that I really want to do this for the long run. I think I'll be able to do it a lot at first, but as I get nearer to a healthy weight it will probably slow down. I can attest to this already. After losing 30, it's already slowed down if I'm not vigilant. Seriously, losing weight is hard!
I haven't kept to my goals as well as I should so far. I should be eating between 1200 and 1550 calories a day, and I totally ate 2000 yesterday! That was my worst day so far, but I've been around 1700-1800 and that makes me feel bad. I swear I'm keeping to my limit today. I did go to the gym and did 30 minutes of cardio and 3 different weight machines today, so I feel good about that.
No hints, I am not in any place to give them. But my only advice is to eat enough. Feeling starved and irritable is no way to keep weight off. My mom proudly told me she ate 1000 cals yesterday, and I told her she'd be back at square 1 in a week if she kept on like that. That's way too little.
I really want to lose close to 20 lbs but I haven't gotten myself motivated to really work it.
Two years ago I did WW with a goal of 40 lbs but quit after I lost 35 because I was happy. Now I have gained 15 of those pounds back in the last 8 months.
Needless to say DH & DS aren't much help because they hated when I was on WW. DS completely quit eating at home and DH complained nightly it tasted like prison food. Personally I thought I did a good job making tasty WW recipes.
I have started walking a mile again daily but I need to up the exercise as well.
My goal is to lose 50 pounds this year. I know that I can do it 'cause I lost 40 pounds in 2007. I put on 12 in 2008. I had a hard time staying on track over the holidays, what with driving 2500 miles and eleventy billion family functions (most of which required copious amounts of alcohol to handle). My other goal is to eat 5 fruits and veggies everyday. So far I'm doing pretty good.
I joined the Y on Friday (no joining fee through Jan. 31), and I've already gone swimming once. I went to cardio kickboxing orientation today, and I'll be doing that Tuesdays and Thursdays. I'm planning to swim about three times a week and do step aerobics at home a couple times a week. Bonus: my employer pays for one month of my Y membership.
Of course, I'm getting completely off track tomorrow at our anniversary dinner, but I'm excited about the coming year.
I don't have any weight loss goals, per se. ?I know, I'm skinny, I should be happy. ?But, really, I need to exercise a lot more since this thin body isn't healthy just sitting around, doing nothing but nesting and drinking, so I'm putting that resolution down here. ?
I want to ski at least twice a week, and that means real, hard skiing, not the wimpy groomers I did the last few days. ?While my thighs burned, that's not enough.
That means during the rest of the week, I need to, at least 4 times, do all my therapy exercises so that I don't destroy my knees. ?I also want to bike to school at least 1/3 of the time, weather permitting of course. ?I don't relish riding on ice. ?Those will be bus days.
Oh, and put down the wine/beer. ?In the last 2 years, since moving from Colorado, while I haven't gained any weight, I've put on a few inches and lost tone. ?Thank you inaction and alcohol. ?The two go hand in hand. ?This means that none of my pants fit anymore, and I hate shopping, so I'm motivated. ?Although, since I'll be in scrubs from now on, I'm sure that the drawstring will demotivate me.
I also need to get my healthy diet back. ?Since moving to the states and not having kitchen stuff for 6 weeks ,I settled into really bad eating habits, the worst I've had in my life. ?So, back to cooking all my meals and not counting nachos or guac as meals.?
I need to lose about 60 pounds. Actually 60 pounds means 5 pounds a month, so that seems like a good number to aim for.
I've been sick for most of the last week, so I haven't exercised, but I've pretty much just been eating soup and tea, so I'm probably on track, calorie-wise.
My three problems are portion control, lack of exercise, and wine/beer. The first one is the easiest to fix...Ijust have to cook smaller dinners so there aren't second helpings to go back to. I discovered the other day a bunch of free fitness videos that are included in my comcast DVR service, so I'll probably give those a try soon, so that takes care of the second problem. We just end up going out a lot...a lot of social activities now that my husband is living the student life and we and our friends are really into wine, microbreweries, etc. We really need to develop other hobbies, so that's probably a longer term change. I did recently get a book on local hikes and a pair of hiking boots, so that's a start.
Bunny - you shouldn't hit yourself up too much about the calories. 1500 is a low amount...even coming in at 2000 is really good, thats probably the recommended amount for most people. So you definitely aren't overeating and that's a great thing.
I want to reach my goal weight by the end of January - which thanks to the holidays is now 4.4 lbs father away so a total of 7 lbs.
I would like to get into an exercise routine and stick with it.
my read shelf:
I just got back from vacation where I ate like crap but am doing great now as of yesterday
. I want to lose 10 lbs but most importantly get in better shape-- I've kind of stagnated and I think it's because I'm not pushing myself. I've never been a big runner but I'm doing the couch to 5 K program, which starts gradually and will put me on a schedule.
Good luck, all. We can do it!
Big giant ditto. I'm going to try to avoid drinking during the week for now and go from there.
Hey ladies,
Sounds like great goals, all-around! My goal is to get back to the weight I maintained for two years after doing WW, which is about 12 pounds from where I am right now (or at least where i was before my trip to my parents for new years!) To do so, I know what I need to do:
1. regular exercise routine. This was the cornerstone of my fitness before, but it's been tough with my back problems. At the very least, I need to be walking and swimming, b/c I can do both of those as long as I'm not in terrible pain.
2. Keep good food in the house and cook. When I'm tired and hurting, and my hubz is working late (as he usually does), the last thing I can deal with is going to the store and cooking for myself. I need to have some easy meals and fresh veggies available all the time, so that I have no excuse to make poor choices.
I can't freaking wait to get back into my normal clothes!
FWIW, I don't really like most of WW's recipes. I lost my 40 pounds on WW, and I'm back to doing it to lose the rest. I found a good pork chili recipe on their website, and I made a chicken casserole that was OK but pretty bland. (Being in NOLA, I'm sure you're used to spicy food - any of their recipes that sound like they should be spicy will need to have the spices increased to taste good.) I got an idea from them for roasted sweet potatoes, but most of the stuff just sounds bland and unappealing.
I prefer to make stuff I was making anyway, but watch my portion sizes, add more vegetables, and modify when possible. The other night I made a vegetable and cheese casserole from my Moosewood book that called for 1/2 cup olive oil. The recipe calls for a ton of olive oil in each layer. Instead, I just lightly brushed each layer. I'm sure it would have been greasily delicious with more oil, but it tasted great, and I used a total of 3-4 tablespoons for a 5-6 serving dish.
I think Cooking Light and Eating Well have better recipes than WW.
I put on a pair of pants this morning and then were not tight like they were the last time I wore them.
I'm not sure how that equates with the entire tupperware full of cookies I ate over the past 2 weeks.
I've been doing well so far. Mr. Liu and I swore at the begining of the year that we will use the Wii Fit every day to at least track our weight/BMI. We are hoping this shames us into working out. I'm using the hour between when Mr. Liu gets up and when I take a shower to exercize rather than knit, as I had been.
My problem is a giant sweet tooth and a lack of veggies in our meals. So, we joined a CSA over the weekend. I figure if the veggies come to us, we have to eat them. Having more than carrots in the house will be a big step in the right direction. I haven't a clue what to do about the sweet tooth, though.
Im not quite sure yet what my # will be - I need to step back on the scale and see exactly where I am right now (I gained some back over the holidays). I *think* I have 12 to get to my initial goal, and maybe 5 more after that depending on how I feel/look/what I can do... I know it isnt much but those last few before you get to your goal weight are HARD... and my body likes to fight me for em
So - I need to get back to the gym. But I have been putting it off because, ridiculously, I dont want to be one of "THOSE" people... the resolutioners... even though really I am one of them
Plus I know the gym will be mobbed which means I really need to get back into my morning-routine... which is so hard... since it will be a madhouse after work.
And I need to work out a meal plan to get back into the swing too. And throw/give away all the leftover christmas treats.
Anyone know if there is an easier way to use sparkpeople if you cook from scratch? Last time I tried I got really frustrated by trying to enter all my ingredients... and I cook new stff all the time so it wasnt like "enter it all once and be done" I think it would benefit me, but I wont bother if there isnt a simpler way (i dont really think there is though)
No, you have to enter them in one by one I think. I don't add the directions, just the ingredients to expedite the process. It is annoying, though.
This is why I stick with WW. If you are cooking with Core ingredients (now called "Filling Foods" on the new Momentum plan), you don't have to deal with points. I mostly cook from scratch, and it's so much easier than figuring out all the calories, etc.
Yeah thats what I was doing BB - still annoying though! "2 T EVOO, 1 can tomatos, 4 cloves garlic... etc etc." blech. Oh well!
Maybe Ill look into core...
thanks!
Oh and part 2 for me will be to keep running, get into decent shape to the pooint where I wont be embarressed to do local road races and maybe train for a half and then someday a marathon. I *really* need to get back into it (note: this has been my resolution each year for many years... its hard to get there and keep it up though!)
I pay $40/month for WW meetings. I have found that I need to go to meetings for it to be effective. It also adds the financial incentive - I better be sticking with the program and making progress because otherwise, it's just wasted money!
Some health insurances or employers will subsidize the cost. My health insurance doesn't, but our premiums are ridiculously low and our coverage ridiculously high, so I can't complain. The H grumbled a bit that between the Y and WW, my weight loss efforts are costing us $90/month, but I told him the condition for buying the new TV was no grumbling. If we can pay money to sit on our buts in front of the toob, then we can pay money for WW and Y memberships.
Which one? Did you join Eatwell?!
My sweet tooth cure has been crystalized ginger from Trader Joes. A bag is cheap...like $2, maybe? And the candy is strong, so you only need one or two. It's sugary, but it also has that astringent taste to it, so it sort of makes your mouth feel like you just brushed your teeth, which I find also kills cravings.
