So... does this combine the whole circumcision and name debates?
A couple friends of ours at school welcomed their son a week ago and had the bris this morning. I had never been to one, so I was a little curious. One of my friends (whom I always sort of cling to at Jewish rituals so she can talk me through them as DH a) doesn't know that much about them and b) has to stand with the men) advised against trying to watch as it's not that pleasant. Suprisingly, the baby barely cried at all, mostly just during the prep because it was cold. I believe one of the professors was the Mohel. Plus at least 2 of the grandparents are surgeons (including one plastic surgeon), so the baby was in good hands.
I was also happy to learn the name - Yitschak. Hopefully they'll call him by his English name, Isaac, a name I like as it was my grandfather's.
Appropriate for a first son, too.
Re: Went to my first Bris this morning!
Eep! I'm sure adolescent Jewish boys across the country rejoice that their Bris is not at their Bar Mitzvah!
Certainly surprising to me because I will never forget my nephew's blood curdling cry.
