EWWWWW...!!! (Dog-related)
I was on a dog-improvement spree tonight 
and cleaned Maisie's ears, then started to comb her. I was focusing on her legs, but when DH walked into the room and she moved towards him, I just started combing out her head/shoulders in order to keep working on her.
Thank goodness I did, because I found a tick on her shoulder! 
She gets preventative, but this isn't the first time I've seen a tick hop on despite that (my parents' dog picks them up constantly despite them religiously applying Frontline Plus just because of where they live).
I freaked and made DH come get it out... I wouldn't go near it (bad enough I found it by touching it!). Bless her heart, she was a perfect angel and didn't so much as make a noise or try to move while we were tending to her.
Ugh. Just the thing to kill your appetite and make you start to itch all over.

LOL! I guess I'm kinda use to it. The worst one was one that apparently had been on Romeo for quite awhile. i just saw this grayish blob drop off of him and roll. When i went to see what it was, i realized it was a tick that was so engorged it couldn't hold on any longer. (it had been attached to ne of his legs) I've pull them off all our dogs (DH won't touch them ) and I've also taken them off of him and my mom. Though the ones on my mom had only attached and she thought it was a mole asn was yelling at me "why was i trying to yank off a mole!" that was until I told her moles don't have legs!
Yeah, where my mom lives, there is a lot of brush, so they pick them up very easily and my mom isn't very good with looking for them. They aren't so bad until they get engorged, then EW is right!
We just found two more (I made DH inspect every inch of her before I could even consider going to bed), all right around the same area. Poor DH has fine-combed her with a metal comb for the past twenty minutes. The problem is, her hair is so crazy and long that it's virtually impossible to just see them, like would be possible on Cal (although he's never picked any up, knock on wood!). We're guessing she picked them up at my parents' house this weekend while she was in the yard, because they weren't even halfway engorged yet (can you tell I've been researching this nastiness all night?).
Rae - I keep reading that these type (what you describe, too) are actually females who will spend approx. 2 weeks on the dog before dropping (like you said!) and then LAYING EGGS.
Ugh... my skin crawls just thinking of it, and I'm even more grateful that we found these so early on. DH is going to be giving her a daily combing every.single.day. for the next week and a half until I'm sure there's nothing left.

Poor Maisie! I'm glad you found the tick though.
FYI: dogs can display the lyme target symbol as well. many vets say that dogs don't, they do. Our Ruff had it on his groin area. it's also hard to tell sometimes if it's a mole or tick in that and the belly area. he also was on preventative and got a lyme shot every year, though maany say that shot is useless.
