Anyone else perplexed???

Why is it that we read, re-read and re-read again these four and a half books and crave them so bad when we ALL know that SM is not the best writer?  I try to read something else and I have NO INTEREST.  I mean, I love Dean Koontz books and I find myself wanting to know where Edward is and what he is doing...

Is the love for the characters enough to carry over her writing non-talent?

I think it must be.  Any other theories?

I write sexy books. I read all the books. I love dresses & macarons.

Re: Anyone else perplexed???

  • Not to mention that once you're done wih the series you rationalize that it's absurd and compltely unrealistic... yet you still keep wanting more!
  • I have not been able to figure this out.

I mean, not only is SM a medicore writer (at best), I actually can't stand the b!tch on a personal level.

I have no idea. No idea.

  • I think it was really clever of her to leave out a detailed description of Bella. It makes it easy for readers to put themselves in that role and I think that's what keeps us coming back for more. It's like we are bing swept off our feet and up into the action along with the other characters.

I get annoyed with her writing too, and the books have a lot of typos which drives me crazy.

  • I believe she is very good at character development, but that's about it. It also doesn't hurt that Edward is soo loveable.

  • While she's a bad writer she is an incredible storyteller. I think it's because it's such a good story (minus the bad writing).

  • I keep buying more and more books, but they just sit on the shelf right now while I keep rereading the saga. It is a mystery to me.

  • I love the characters & I think SM did a really great job of bringing them to life.  I do often wish someone else could have wrote this, because it could have been SO MUCH better.

Even with the bad writing, though, the characters seem real to me (yes I'm crazy).  I want to know more about them: what they're thinking, what they're doing, etc...

  • For me, she did such a good job developing the characters that I would read a book about them playing scrabble and still enjoy it.

  • It's absolutely the characters.  That's why I don't even care about the complete absence of a plot in so much of the saga.  As I read the books the first time, I kept going back and reading the same page over and over again before I could finally move on.  It wasn't the race to get to the end and know what happens that I usually feel when I read.  I felt like I just wanted to stay in the moment with the characters, no matter what they were doing.

    lol me too.

  • I agree with Kayash. She is a fabulous character writer. She is great at developing them and getting them stuck in your head. She did a great job with the Host too. The plot by itself isn't all the great but you have to find out what happens to these people. It's all about the people. There aren't many characters in her stories where you feel so-so about. I have a strong opinion about most of them because she spends so much time building them up.

I completely agree (about the typos) She actually thanks someone at the end of one of the books for reading and re reading them for errors (if I remember correctly) and I consistently found spelling/grammar errors.

But I agree with all pp's that there was some great character development, I really fell in love with the characters and their relationships and connected well to them.

    Ditto.?

  • I think the characters is what keeps drawing me in--that's the only explanation that I can come up with!
