Vent: the MIL...

So we are having a 1 year old birthday party for Eli coming up and i sent out an email to let the family know as a heads up before I sent out the invitations. ?Here is her response to my mail...

Hi Jess,????????? I don't want to put a damper on your excitement for Eli's birthday but I just remember you saying he has enough toys and clothes and, considering the fact that he really will not be aware at this age that this party is even for him, I'm not sure of the purpose of such a large gettogether.? We definitely do want to celebrate his birthday though--can't believe it's been a year already!!??????????????? Carol?I was so upset and hurt by this email. ?We are having a party to celebrate his life with our closest friends and family. ?The good thing is, is that I think we have reconciled because i emailed her back letting her know how hurt i was adn she wrote back apologizing and saying that she wants to be able to treat me as one of her kids and had never heard of a "party" for a one year old. ?which is weird because my family has always done that and most of my friends have done that as well. ?Oiy!?

Re: Vent: the MIL...

  • Never heard of a party for a 1 year old????  Well I've never heard of not having one!  I don't blame you for being upset but at least she apologized when you told her that it hurt your feelings.  Good for you standing up to her, sometimes I have a hard time doing that with mine and she can be quite pushy.
  • Where does she come from that she hasn't heard of a 1st birthday party???  Is she for real?

I hope you are still excited to plan the party.....MIL's can be a interesting sometimes, can't they?

  • Wow...I can't believe she sent you that email.  Where did she grow up that they didn't have 1 year old birthday parties??  Good for you in standing up for yourself.  I have an interesting MIL as well.  Good luck!
  • Crazy! Tell her that people even have 1st birthday parties for their dogs!

I just saw the new ticker...congrats!!

  • What an obnoxious email!  She makes it sound like you're just trying to score more stuff for him.  She says herself that they want to celebrate his birthday. Why should she be so surprised that other people want to celebrate as well?  Good for you for standing up for yourself. I'm glad she at least apologized.

  • Please email her this:

If you haven't heard of a party for a one year old, then you obviously have never ordered a cake from the grocery store... in which in the bakery they advertise that cakes for a 1 year old are free............. because people have parties for 1 year olds!!!!!!!!!!!?

  • Wow, I can't believe she hasn't heard of a birthday party for a one year old.  You just want to celebrate your child with your family and friends.

  • Hmm. What an interesting passive-aggressive tactic.  At least she apologized.  Most of my friends have the first birthday parties to get together with friends and so that everyone can watch the mess that is baby's eating/smearing the birthday cake.
  • Its crazy, haha, i talked to her today and things are okay with us, but like, i've always had to try so hard to make her happy. ?She was happy when we were pregnant, but i really think she would have?preferred?one of her girls to get pregnant first (there are 4!). ?Its not as bad as it could be. ?i want him to smash cake in his face for everyone! ?And... FREE CAKE? ?is it a big one? ?which grocery store?
  • Wow. I really can't believe she emailed that. I mean, who dosen't have at least some type of celebration for their one year old? The classic sit in high chair and smear cake all over your face photos? Good for you for sharing your thoughts and that it hurt!

I swear that MIL's come from different planets. My goal is to never be one of them when it is my turn! ?Is it just me, or is it just mothers of sons (especially those with only one son!) who are the worst?

  • Almost any grocery store. Why not hit a couple and free the extras?Stick out tongue
Anyway, my take is she thinks your are just trolling for presents. Which, if you had already told her that he has too many, doesn't really hold water.

And even back in the day..say that your Dh was 1 years old, they still had 1st bday parties. Like  pp noted. it's usually to get pictures of the child and the cake! Is she that out of the real world or doesn't have many friends? SHEESH!
