Brookles - couch to 5k?

I have been thinking about trying this out, but the timing perplexes me.  How are you doing it?  Do you have a stop watch?  Are you outside or on a treadmill?

I know there are MP3s on iTunes especially for it...have you looked at those?

Re: Brookles - couch to 5k?

  • I'm not Brookles, but I have done the couch to 5k before. (I haven't run in a while, so I plan to start over when the weather warms up.) I have a cheap stopwatch I got at Target, and I go outside in the mornings. I just look down at my watch to see when to switch. I really like it, but I found when I got up to the later weeks, I had to make sure not to go several days in a row, or I got shin splints.

  • Oh great, thanks jenni, I'll check these out.

I'm sort of torn on what to do... I get paranoid on the street with an iPod on...I feel less alert and like I'm a target for theft or an attack.  My neighborhood is not the greatest.  It's "transitional" and there's some minor crime, like grafitti and property damage, that happens around here occassionally.  But, I hate, hate, hate exercising without an iPod.  And I can't afford a gym membership right now, so a treadmill is out.

  • Can you get a really inexpensive flash MP3 player? You can get a 1G iPod Shuffle for $40 from Target, and it would clip onto your clothes. Or you could get a non-iPod brand (I have a Zen Stone) if you think that would attract less attention. I don't think anybody would hassle you for a $40 flash player.

  • I just finished the first week and I really like it so far.I would (tentatively, since I just started) recommend it. I have tried running so many times but just burn myself out by doing too much in the beginning.

I bought a 50$ 4G sansa clip to use for exercising only, so I wouldn't be too upset if I broke it or lost it.  I belong to a gym, though, and I understand your reluctance to use an mp3 player while running outside. Is there a safer area you could drive to and run there?

I use this gentleman's podcasts and they are suitable, although I get a bit sick of them by the end of the week.

There's some upbeat techno music, and his pleasant, encouraging voice tells you when to run and when to walk. Week one is 5 min warmup, then intervals of 60 seconds running mixed with 90 seconds walking, then a 5 min cooldown. It would be easier enough to remember that you probably could just do it with a timer or regular watch, but I like that I don't have to worry about timing and can just concentrate on running.

Despite health benefits, another thing I'm enjoying about running is the sense of accomplishment.

    Good luck figuring things out!

  • Oh, and I should add that if you go running early in the morning, I think you'll be perfectly safe. I have no stats to back this up, but I don't think that the people who would rob you are really up and about at 6am. I live in a pretty safe neighborhood, and when I've gone out between 5:30 and 6, I've only seen a handful of lights on inside houses. I usually see stuff like one person walking a dog, one person going to work early, and one person taking out the garbage, but I think all the troublemakers are still asleep!

  • I did Couch to 5k when I first started running, and it was a great program. I used a treadmill at the gym, so it was easy to keep track of the time, but I can see how it would be more difficult to keep track outside. I'd get a cheapo stopwatch if I was doing it outside.

I run outside with an ipod, and I feel safe, but I only run during daylight. I won't go out by myself when it's dark. My neighborhood is fairly safe, but there are a decent number of break-ins and auto thefts, so I know how you feel.

Is there a middle school or HS close to you? If so, you could try running on their track. They're usually open to the public during non-school hours.

Actually, the stats on rape are that the vast majority happen between 3 am and 7 am.

If I run towards the east or north, then I'm running towards better neighborhoods than if I run south or west.  So, I think I'll just have to be strategic about the direction I head in.

This is a really good idea.  There's one about a half mile away, though I don't know what their outdoor sports stuff situation is like.  I think I'll call them later today and find out.

  • I've run on the track at the middle school down the street from my house, and there are almost always other people there, too. It's not as interesting as running through a neighborhood, but it's safe, it's a very easy way to keep track of your distance, and it's easy to stash a water bottle or extra clothes somewhere.

I did the same thing at a HS in my old neighborhood, too, so I'm pretty sure this is a widespread phenomenon.

  • Interesting stats about rapes, thanks. I had no idea. I'm curious to know the breakdown of stranger rape vs. acquaintance rape.

Of course, if you start feeling unsafe, you should certainly go home. Every neighborhood is different. I just know that mine is pretty dead in the mornings.

Is there any kind of a recreational path nearby? We have tons of them, and they are pretty safe because of the amount of traffic they get. Plus, they are more enjoyable to run on because the park scenery is nice.

  • A track 1/2 mile away would be fantastic - great distance for warm up/cool down. When I was couch-to-5King and triathlon training I got a $15 stop watch/heart rate monitor from Target (my heartrate skyrockets when I run, so I have to watch out). I had a dirt cheap MP3 player too that I've since stepped on being a clutz playing tennis - check out Amazon. Or you could stick your iPod inside your clothes somehow and use off brand ear buds - I need the wrap around the ear kind to run anyways. You could just use one bud so you can hear more around you.
