Hit a deer...

Or I guess the deer hit us as I like to think of it. I'm afraid to hit any animal, especially a deer. DH and I left to run to the bank and grab some dinner at Quiznos quick since we're in the process of putting our upstairs back together after getting new carpet. ?DH was driving and I saw it start to come from his side. It is like slow motion though when you can't get it out before it actually happens but it feels like forever. I have no idea how, but thankfully we only need to get a new front passenger side headlight case as there is a very small piece out of it. Of course we were driving my SUV that we've only had since June, but I guess its tough! I can't believe we got away with absolutly nothing wrong. DH checked underneath, the engine and all looks fine.

Not so sure for the deer though. Anyway, poor Sadie was with us and was shaking for a good 15 minutes after. I think I screamed, which I'm sure scared her. ? : (

Just glad that everything is ok!?

Re: Hit a deer...

  • Megan, I'm so sorry that happened to you guys.  You are very lucky there wasn't more damage.  I hit a deer once, years ago, as it literally lunged out from an embankment and smacked right into my car.  I drove the car with a major dent in the side for rest of the time I owned it.  The deer didn't fair so well.

I'm glad you are all okay.

  • I'm so incredibly sorry.  That is such a scary thing to go through. I'm glad you are all ok and that there is a minor damage.

A deer hit me, ran right out in front of me on 15 in Frederick a few years ago.  That was the worst feeling being alone.  It was in the middle of rush hour and no one stopped, the deer ran off but I was very upset about it and of course it was in the middle of a horrible thunderstorm.

  • Ugh, no fun!  Thank goodness you and Justin (and Sadie, of course!) were okay, but it is scary, nonetheless.  Lucky, too, that your car escaped with minimal damage.  My dad had one jump into his car a few years back and had serious damage to the passenger side that was quite pricey to repair.  At least the headlight won't be too bad!

On a happier note, is your new carpet all you hoped for? :)

  • That definitely stinks.  I'm glad to hear that there wasn't major damage to your car though.

  • Ashlee--yes, thank goodness there is one thing to be happy about. I love the carpet and makes me feel like we have a new house or something! Neko has been rolling on his back in what looks like heaven to him. He must like it as well!
  • Oh man! I am so sorry! I hit one a few years ago and it seriously screwed up my entire front end. I needed a new front everything. Luckily nothing mechanical broke, but it needed a new grill, front bumper, hood, front left panel, headlights, windshield, and total paint job. It was awful. I totally know what you mean about it coming out of nowhere and not being able to do anything about it. I am glad you are ok! I hope the deer is OK too!

  • That's so scary. Deer always freak me out since you never know what they'll do.  I'm glad you are all okay (hope the deer is too!) and that there was only minimal damage.
  • I'm glad you're all okay and there wasn't significant damage!

FYI, in some (maybe all?) auto insurance policies, damage caused by deer is covered under the comprehensive portion instead of collision.  We chose to have lower deductibles on our comprehensive for this reason.

Also, if you do hit a deer, you're not supposed to hit your brakes.  That way, if the deer hits your windshield, it should bounce over your car rather than thru it.  Not trying to scare anyone, it's just info I learned in a driver's safety class.

  • Oh that is so scary!  I'm glad everyone is ok and there wasn't much damage to your car.
