My ex-stepmom offered us her old baby furniture, although they said they'd take pics and send it but they haven't done that yet. Anyways, she mentioned an old crib, that she used for both my half siblings who are now in college/HS.
Is there any safety issues about used cribs like this that you know of off hand? Anything I should look out for? I mean, it lasted through two kids and she and my dad would have noticed any recalls around the time that were using it. Should I still try to get a new mattress for it? I think its been in the basement for forever.
My stupid Baby Bargins book is still waiting to be shipped so hopefully it will address this issue but I thought I'd pick ya'lls brains in the mean while.
Re: (@) re: Used cribs
Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
BB recommends against buying a used crib. Older models tend not to be consistent with current safety standards (which went into effect in 1999).Concerns about old cribs include decorative cutouts in the sides, too widely spaced spindles (trap hazards), posts (possible strangulation hazard if blankets or anything else gets around them), lead paint, missing parts/directions, too loose mattress fit, slat attachment strength, stability issues, etc.
Personally, I would not use a used crib. You can get a new crib fairly inexpensively if you're looking.
ETA: I have BB if you're looking for specific ratings or brand recommendations or whatever.
I am the 99%.
Good idea. There are gap issues, there could be strength issues - if it's been stored in an attic and gotten hot and then cold, it could stress the joints, etc.
When BB says buy new, I'd buy new. (Unless you know the "provenance" and even then, I'd check like crazy about recalls.)
Ditto.
