Maybe someone on here can help. Our lease expires on April 30,2009. Our landlord is demanding that we let them know by February 13 if we are re-signing our not. Can they make us do that so soon? I can't even decide if there are any decent places I might want to rent by February 13 for a May 1 lease start date. I've been googling Chicago Landlord and Tenant Agreement and combing through some info but can't find something specifically to say they cannot do that to us.
Re: chicago tenants rights?
Hmm...I'm not too sure. Have you explained to your landlord why you feel it's too early to provide a response and commitment? If they're not willing to give you some more time to decide, it may be worth considering if you still want to rent from this landlord. When DH and I were renting, we decided not to renew our lease one year due to our landlord being a bit pushy about renewing (along with some other issues), so I can understand what you're going through.
From the landlord's point of view, I can understand them being nervous about keeping their rental property rented out. With mortgage rates falling and the economy not doing so well, these could be factors that would make them anxious about their apartment sitting vacant for any amount of time.
Sorry I don't have a direct answer, but hope this helps.
Take a look in your lease. I rent units and I ask for 60 days of notice, so in your case, it would be Mar 1 or so. In Chicago, it doesn't specify how much notice you must give, the landlord can decide that.
The good news is that he can't kick you out w/ out a lot of work, haha.
Our lease stipulates 60 days notice as well.?
Good luck!?
