What is the deal with moderators?

I occasionally lurk on other boards and I have noticed that they now have moderators who are regular nesties. Does anyone know what the deal is with this?

I can totally see the need for it on E08 (now Politics) because there were nasty trolls on there before the election and most of the regulars left. I wonder if every board will get one or just the ones with complaints. It doesn't seem like the cooking board is is a hot bed of nasty posts but they have one too.

I saw a post the other day on a board I was lurking on where the Nest Someone-or-Other was asking for volunteers to be moderators. She pretty much said that they're putting them on all the national boards. I guess they needed to keep people in check on some of the snarkier boards and it was easier to just do it for all the nationals rather than pick and choose which boards actually needed it.

Yeah, there were posts on some of the nationals (not all though) asking for volunteers to be moderators. They are not "Gods" but they have the ability to delete posts and report issues with trolls or too much personal information. It's supposed to be a way of keeping an eye on things a little more in real time.
