question for moms and moms-to-be

where did you get your crib/nursery furniture?

We are having SUCH a hard time!  We don't want to spend a lot b/c we don't plan on converting it to a toddler bed and using it for a long tme.  Once this baby grows out of it, we'll get him a bedroom set he can use through childhood (we would want to re-use the crib for any future kids though).

I am leaning towards Graco crib (walmart/target/babies r us all carry it) and storkcraft glider (walmart) but they are so cheap compared to others that I'm afraid that will really reflect in the quality and I'll regret it!

Thanks for any feedback!

Re: question for moms and moms-to-be

  • We got the crib and dresser from JCPenneys.  Our glider is from Walmart.  I'm not sure what brand it is but it was incredibly cheap and is still holding up well.
  • thank you!  I am so paranoid it'll fall apart and I'll kick myself for not spending more to begin with!
  • We got our cribs from BRU and my glider is from there too.  I don't think they are cheap at all.  My DH is an engineer and a bit anal, and he fully examined them before purcahsing.
  • If you don't already have one, get yourself a copy of Baby Bargains before you buy any furniture! It will list the pricing and safety information of all the major brands, as well as the manufacturers that sell under different brand names. Hands down, best $11 I spent on a pre-baby purchase!

Also, buy online if you can.  We were able to comparison shop, didn't have to pay shipping on anything and found prices waaaay cheaper than BRU and any other store.

FWIW, we bought a 3 in 1 crib, specifically because we aren't having any more children.  If you are planning on more than 1, a convertible may not be the best way to go. You may still need it as a crib and won't be able to use it as a toddler bed at the same time!

  • sorry not to be any help, we got our stuff at BRU, the crib is convertable and we got a matching dresser, both of which he will use forever, it goes crib, toddler and then a full size bed, so IMO it was worth it.  I have looked into certain products at walmart/target and most of what I have seen/tried out didn't feel all that sturdy.
  • Ours was BRU, but it's a convertible set, which you said you don't want.  I can't remember the brand, but I remember that we used the Baby Bargains Book and really relied heavily on the ratings in there.  It's one of the best purchases we made.  There are a lot of affordable bedroom sets out there, just do your homework and make sure the safety is top notch.  I HIGHLY recommend Baby Bargains.  There's a new version every year that has the most up-to-date safety & recall info.
  • I also love Baby Bargains. We haven't bought our set yet, but I've done my research in that book and it came highly recommended from friends. We're looking at Munire and Westwood Designs furniture - both convertible, though.
  • I also love Baby Bargains!  We haven't ordered our set yet, either, but from the little bit of looking we did, I can tell you the non-convertible cribs are not that common anymore (BRU seemed to have had the biggest selection).

I was originally dead set against a convertible crib because most of them turn into a full size bed which we don't have room for, but the two sets I like both have the convertible crib.  Hopefully we'll be in a new house by the time we need the bed, but if not, we'll substitute a twin bed until we move and have the room for the larger one.

  • I got my glider at Albeebaby.com. It was a good deal plus free shipping. They have good deals on car seats too. Several of my friends swear by them. My crib was hand me down from my brother in law.  I got the changing table from BRU. Horrible experience. MIL paid for it though. I wouldn't buy any furniture from them again...EVER. I would probably use JCPennys in future. I've gotten alot of furniture from them in the past. My bookshelves are from IKEA. I maybe would have checked out their furniture but I had forgotten about them until I was almost ready to deliver. I waddled over there. Man that place was PG woman central.
