Warning--Purse at the Movies!!!

My best friend and I had a girls' night last night in DE (1/2 way for each of us) we rented a room at the Hilton and went to see Bride Wars (cute movie--we were each other's MOH at the same time, so we were particularly entertained).

Anyways, at the movie, we sat down and she had her purse on the floor while i had mine on my lap.  About 20 min into the movie, we noticed the 2 women in front of us leave.  We didnt think much of it.

The movie ended and we were back at the hotel getting ready for dinner when Melissa got a call from her Wachovia credit card verifying a $500 charge at Macys.  WE NEVER WENT TO MACYS!  She looked in her wallet and sure enough, her Wachovia card was gone.  She then noticed that another card was gone....and another....and 2 more.  5 credit cards were missing!  She didnt notice bc her wallet was reaaranged to cover all the slots in the wallet.

Apparently, while we were in the movie, someone took her purse, took the CC's and used them all during the course of the movie.  We suspect the 2 women in front of us who left after 20 min.  She called each CC to cancel and EACH ONE was used...$500, $400, $1400!  We called the police to file a report and there isnt much they can do, but the officer said that this has happened before.

SO GIRLS, WATCH YOUR PURSES AT THE MOVIES!  Make sure that they are on your lap.  We are still baffled how they got her purse bc she reached down a few times to get mini bottles of wine we were drinking and never noticed anything.  It was just such a pain and she felt so upset and violated.  It definitely put a damper on our girls night!

Re: Warning--Purse at the Movies!!!

  • Yea I here that happens really often. I always hold my purse during the movies. What a pain for your friend!
  • omg, that really sucks! I hope your friend was able to get the charges taken off...

what the eff is wrong with people...

DH and I went to Cirque du soliel last May in Philly, and we bought refreshments during the intermission using my debit card. Two days later there was a charge for Gamestop for almost $200, well i sure as heck dont shop there..Dh does, but he has his own debit card. We are almost positive after doing our own investigating with Gamestop themselves and the bank, that the cashier who rang us up at Cirque must have copied my numbers somehow off my card and tried to order a Playstation 3 from Gamestop.com. And when that was declined, he just tried to order some games...

  • Wow, that is awful. ?I am such a freak about always keep an eye on my purse because this stuff happens everywhere.

BTW, I was also at the movies last night seeing Bride Wars. ?It was so funny!?

  • Holy crap! That's awful!
  • Wow, Krista that's horrible!  If they left 20 minutes into the movie, the theater should have a video of them leaving.  Did you ask them to check?  Plus, if you know where the cards were used there should also be video of them making the purchases.

I hope everything works out and she doesn't have to pay for any of the charges.

  • Oh gosh that's horrible!
  • That is horrible! I'm glad wachovia flagged it and alerted her before all the cards got maxed out. I hope she gets her money back without too much hassle.
  • Thanks for the advice. I never would have thought about keeping my purse near me. I thought I could leave my purse anywhere and it would be fine. I'm so glad you are here to give such great tips.
  • That really sucks! I really hate that in this world people suck so bad.

  • Note to self: get mini bottles of wine before next trip to movies.

haha yes, they made the movie pretty darn funny :)

By my friend's house in Baltimore, they put in a new movie theater with a bar in it!  What a good idea!  That is why we decided to bring our own

  • That is rough.  I agree though, in this age of technology cant they find video of this person using your card?
  • my friend called the police and filed a report and she pretty much asked them this.  The officer basically said that it is very unlikely that there will be an investigation/ the women will get caught.  He also said that about a month ago the same exact thing happened at that movie theater and the victim gave the same description of the 2 women!

That made us so mad bc these women just walked away with over $3k worth of stuff and are not going to get caught!  Hopefully one of the cc companies or someone will do an investigation bc these women deserve to be caught.

  • That is crazy! Thank God for credit protection. I usually keep mine on my lap, too - mainly b/c of the dirty floors, but now I have another good reason!!

I'm also envious of the mini bottles of wine - good idea!

  • That is such ashame.  Seriously, what is wrong with people?!

And I'm glad I'm not the only alcoholic that boozes it up at the movies with little bottles of wine :)

  • I hope she doesn't have to pay!
